Schlumberger Information Solutions Contributes Software to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS - Masters Petroleum Engineering Program
Posted: 16 March 2005
Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) announced that it has contributed a $6 million ( US ) package of advanced subsurface evaluation and petroleum engineering software technologies to the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Tronoh , Malaysia .
Supporting the practical aspect of the students' training in the newly formed Masters of Petroleum Engineering Course, the software mirrors that being used commercially by PETRONAS and other oil and gas companies. The SIS software will provide the students, researchers and the faculty with a suite of integrated tools that will enhance the petroleum engineering capabilities and develop a distinctive excellence.
"Technology has made tremendous changes to the way oil and gas fields are discovered, developed and managed," said Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil, director of Post Graduate Studies at UTP. "Now this advanced software has become an essential and integral component in the teaching of post graduate university courses related to the exploration and production (E & P) industry. Both PETRONAS and the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS are committed to developing the skills of domestic and international engineering talent in line with world class standards."
The software package being donated to UTP includes licenses for the Petrel* workflow tools; Interactive Petrophysics for the petrophysical domain; ECLIPSE* reservoir simulation software; OFM* product management software, PIPESIM* total production system modeling for both subsurface and surface facilities design; and Merak Peep* economic evaluation and decline analysis software.
"The students will gain a real advantage from having access to the same software that SIS provides to the E & P industry," said Stephen Kaufmann, Schlumberger GeoMarket manager, Brunei, Malaysia and Philippines. "It will equip them with practical skills and knowledge that enables them to become effective and immediate contributors in this dynamic but technically challenging environment."
In tandem with providing the software for the Masters in Petroleum Engineering course, SIS has entered into a contract with UTP to provide training courses for the specific applications. These training courses will run in parallel with the lectures and are designed to complement the theoretical aspects of the Petroleum Engineering course.
The Masters in Petroleum Engineering program at UTP, which started in 2004, is a result of an academic collaboration with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh , Scotland . The three-semester, postgraduate program covers reservoir modeling, simulation, facilities and completion design, production engineering field development and petroleum economics with business and management electives.
Schlumberger Oilfield Services Malaysia is a proud supporter of both secondary and tertiary education in Malaysia .
