OMV opens office in Brussels

Posted: 23 March 2005

In March, OMV Aktiengesellschaft, the leading oil and gas group in Central Europe, is opening an office in Brussels. Its goal will be to strengthen existing contacts through frequent information transfer. OMV will be represented in Brussels by Philipp Strommer, an expert in European law.

“OMV is a European company based in Vienna, that in 2004 achieved record results with sales of EUR 9.88 billion and a net income of EUR 642 million. Our home market is Central Europe, with focus on the new EU Member States as well as those countries with which negotiations are in progress for accession in 2007. It is therefore only logical for us to also have a representative directly in Brussels,” commented CEO Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer.

It will be Philipp Strommer’s responsibility to enhance the provision of information by OMV to the appropriate authorities. Initially, his attention will be focused in particular on the natural gas and
plant nutrients sectors.

Alongside oil, refining and filling station activities, gas is also essential for OMV’s business. The Baumgarten Gas Hub of OMV Gas is already one of Europe’s most important natural gas hubs, with a transmission volume of approximately 41 bcm per year. Expansion of this role is targeted. A current project in this regard is “Nabucco” – a gas pipeline that could connect the region around the Caspian Sea with Central Europe and, with a capacity of from 25 to 30 bcm, could significantly increase Europe ’s gas supply. In view of this, the EU also helped finance the feasibility study carried out by the five consortium partners (Botas, Bulgargaz EAD, Transgaz S.A., MOL Ltd, and OMV Gas GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of OMV Aktiengesellschaft). “The next steps in the development of Nabucco should therefore be coordinated with the EU in an efficient way,“ according to Ruttenstorfer.

Philipp Strommer will also be focusing on AMI (Agrolinz Melamine International) – a wholly owned subsidiary of OMV Aktiengesellschaft that is the leading producer of plant nutrients in the Danube region and hold the No. 2 position worldwide with respect to melamine. Here Strommer will be concerned with the development of the European fertilizer industry, dealing with matters pertaining to commercial and environmental policies.
