First Suncor-branded diesel outlet planned for Fort McMurray

Travellers of Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray should soon see a new Suncor Energy sign advertising a diesel fuel “cardlock” station. Although Suncor owns and operates numerous retail gasoline stations under the Phillips 66 and Sunoco brands in the U.S. and Canada , the Fort McMurray cardlock will soon be the first ever Suncor Energy-branded fuel outlet.
Suncor soon expects to receive a development permit from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and construction of the new facility, which is slated to begin next month, should be completed in May. The site for the proposed cardlock facility is located at the north end of Fort McMurray off Highway 63, on land leased from Diversified Transport. Construction costs are estimated to be approximately $1 million.
“The Wood Buffalo region is a very large market for diesel fuel, and it’s growing all the time,” said Richard Brown, vice president of Suncor Energy Marketing Inc. “Suncor has been selling its diesel fuel in bulk for a number of years, primarily to other companies that transport it in tanker trucks to other markets. It’s a logical step for us to open a cardlock facility like this in order to better serve our growing customer base.”
Planned is a canopied three-island cardlock with six fuel pumps, selling diesel fuel supplied from Suncor’s oil sands operation. Cardlock station customers will use an access card to unlock the fuel pump, with purchases charged automatically to the card holder. The unstaffed outlet would be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
