E & P Honors Qatif Teamwork
Posted: 28 March 2005
By any measure, the Qatif-Abu Sa'fah projects are remarkable.
The largest petroleum industry project of its kind ever built was completed three months ahead of schedule and under budget. The complex adds a net of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to Saudi Aramco's crude oil production. It also produces 370 million standard cubic feet (scfd) of associated gas and 40,000 bpd of high-value condensate.
A project of that magnitude is a team effort. The outstanding contributions of eight departments from Exploration and Producing (E&P) were honored March 5 by Abd Allah S. Al-Saif, senior vice president of E&P; Fahad A. Al-Moosa, vice president of Petroleum Engineering and Development (PE&D); Abdulla A. Al-Naim, executive director of Exploration; and other members of Saudi Aramco executive management.
The departments represented were: Reservoir Management, Reservoir Description and Simulation, Production and Facilities Development, Reservoir Characterization, Drilling and Workover (D&WO) Engineering, D&WO Services, Northern Area Oil D&WO, and Southern Area Oil D&WO.
AbdulHameed H. Aborshaid, general supervisor of Northern Area Reservoir Management, emceed the ceremony and reviewed key milestones. He emphasized the teamwork and collaboration among the organizations involved in accomplishing the huge mission.
Al-Saif and Al-Moosa congratulated the E&P individuals and departments whose contributions made the Qatif and Abu Sa'fah projects a success. They noted that team spirit, cooperation, determination, commitment and management support were the driving forces behind that success.
Highlights included:
- Advanced technologies in extended-reach drilling, logging and geo-steering were used to reach reservoir targets. For instance, the longest extended-reach horizontal well in Saudi Aramco was drilled to 7,650 meters onshore. Extended-reach technology was also used to reach under the Arabian Gulf and replace offshore platforms with land-based drilling islands.
- The latest technologies for tar and heavy oil identification were used in Qatif to help place horizontal power water injection wells exactly over impermeable tar mats.
- Abu Sa'fah is the first Saudi Aramco fieldwide application of real-time production rate and down-hole pressure monitoring. A unique aspect of the project was to use electric submersible pumps both to provide the needed lift for the reservoir and to transport the product 60 km to the onshore Abu Sa'fah GOSP.
- Fourteen rigs were employed onshore and offshore to complete drilling and workover operations on time.
Al-Saif and Al-Moosa outlined the challenges each project faced and congratulated E&P employees for their innovations and high safety standards. They were joined by Al-Naim to present awards to the E&P participants, whose wells for the project are among the most modern and innovative in the world.
