Honeywell Announces Commercial Use of Aclon
Posted: 25 April 2005
Honeywell has announced the commercialization of Aclon™ polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTE) resin for multilayer containers, which can be used in the healthcare, personal care and specialty chemicals industries for various packaging applications including oral hygiene products, eye care products, cough medicines, lyophilized drugs, specialty oils and high purity chemicals. Aclon™ resin offers the highest moisture barrier of any clear thermoplastic resins.
Monolayer and multilayer containers using Aclon™ resin as a sandwich or contact layer between plastic materials are crystal clear, shatterproof and lightweight. They also are biochemically inert and plasticizer- and stabilizer-free, offering extremely low extractables and leachables.
Packaging performance is critical for the healthcare, personal care and specialty chemicals industries, affecting safety, weight, functionality, compliance and speed-to-marketplace. Aclon™ resin enables customers to offer the same barrier properties of standard containers in smaller, sample-size packaging.
“Efficacy is increasingly a priority for the entire packaging industry,” said Jay Shah, market segments leader with Honeywell Specialty Films. “This new technology has successfully demonstrated the barrier properties needed to help improve shelf life and flavor scalping of liquids. It also offers an alternative to glass when packaging sensitive drugs and medications, which can alleviate shattering and related safety concerns. Because of this, Aclon™ resin enables bottle makers to reach previously unattainable markets.”
Aclon™ resin also provides a variety of other key properties for clear multilayer containers, including good processability, low coefficient of friction and superior chemical resistance.
Honeywell is working closely with Wilmington Machinery and other experts in blow molding who can manage all phases of the commercialization, including product development, molds, processing and up stream/down stream support equipment. It is part of a concerted effort to provide clear multilayer containers to industries where performance is critical. Wilmington Machinery is based in North Carolina .
In addition to Aclon™ resin, Honeywell manufactures Aclar® , a polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) fluoropolymer film used extensively in pharmaceutical packaging and many other applications; Capran® Emblem™ and Capran® Medallion™, which are biaxially oriented nylon-6 films, also known as biaxially oriented polyamide (BOPA) films; Capran® heat stabilized nylon films; and PMP (polymethylpentene) film used in aerospace and rubber manufacturing.
