ExxonMobil Reports Record Energy Efficiency, Health and Safety Performance
Posted: 16 May 2005
Exxon Mobil Corporation has released its 2004 Corporate Citizenship Report describing the company's global performance in meeting world energy demand in an economically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner.
The report provides data from business operations and highlights the company's approach to global challenges, from economic development and human rights to energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions and critical health problems such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.
In 2004, ExxonMobil recorded its best safety and health performance, retaining its leadership position in the petroleum industry. The company achieved record energy efficiency in its refining and chemical businesses and continued to improve efficiency well ahead of the petroleum industry's historical rate.
"Public trust is earned not through commitments and pledges alone, but through the daily actions and efforts of our employees the world over," said Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil's chairman and CEO. "We believe that what gives our words meaning across the 200 countries and territories where we live and operate is the rigorous, systems-driven approach to responsible business practice which is embedded and applied throughout our global operations."
From ExxonMobil's Standards of Business Conduct, created more than 30 years ago, to programs in environmental business planning, energy efficiency, safety and community relations, the consistent, global application of these systems is the backbone of the company's citizenship commitment.
This year's report includes a new section entitled "Citizenship in Focus" which illustrates select case studies of ExxonMobil's initiatives around the world. Other new material highlighted in the report includes:
-- Discussion on policies against bribery and corruption
-- Resettlement and land rights
-- Engaging with indigenous communities
-- Controlled hydrocarbon discharges to water
-- Handling of recycled, reused and reclaimed materials
