Roxar Announces IRAP RMS ™ to Run on 64-Bit Linux Desktop
Posted: 23 May 2005
Roxar, a leading technology solutions provider to the upstream oil and gas industry, today announced that its flagship 3D reservoir modeling software, IRAP RMS™ is to operate on the Linux 64-bit platform to meet the large-scale data needs and price / performance expectations of the Exploration & Production (E&P) industry.
IRAP RMS™ joins Roxar’s leading reservoir simulation software, Tempest, in operating on the Linux 64-bit, UNIX 64-bit and Windows platforms. The benefits to Roxar users will include increased data volumes, faster speeds and lower operating costs. Recent Roxar benchmarking data shows that, in certain tests, IRAP RMS™ can run up to six times faster on Linux 64-bit.**
Today’s announcement will allow E&P companies to now enjoy the lower cost-of-ownership benefits of Linux 64-bit on the desktop. Users will be able to maximize performance from their oil and gas reservoirs at dramatically lower hardware costs.
Roxar CEO, Sandy Esslemont, welcomed the announcement:
"While Roxar has always prided itself on its reputation as a technology innovator, today’s announcement is a giant technological step forward – even by Roxar’s standards. With our research showing that E&P companies are demanding ever larger amounts of 3D modeling data on their desktops at faster speeds, it has become clear that a high performance, data intensive and cost effective desktop is central to speeding up and improving the exploration and production process."
He continues:
"By allowing our industry leading IRAP RMS™and Tempest software to run across a wide range of platforms, Roxar is setting another industry standard and ensuring that we remain one step ahead of our customers’ needs and those of the wider industry in providing the very best in both price and performance."
Key benefits of Roxar’s IRAP RMS™ software, running on the Linux 64-bit platform, include:
- Faster Performance. With IRAP RMS™ running up to six times faster on Linux 64-bit, the E&P industry can look forward to faster 3D reservoir modeling through Linux 64-bit with faster processing power and visualization. With billions of iterative calculations required to build a complete 3D model of the reservoir, increased computational power on the desktop and substantially faster visualization will allow IRAP RMS™ users to not only build larger models but also to develop multiple scenarios leading to a more complete analysis of the reservoir and improved decision-making.
- Larger Data Sets. Users will be able to run IRAP RMS™ from their desktops with virtually unlimited volumes of data compared to the traditional 2 Gigabyte limit of 32-bit platforms. On 64-bit platforms the only barrier is physical hardware memory. The ability to run larger, more detailed models from the desktop will also lead to greater accuracy and detail in developing 3D models and maximized reservoir performance.
- Lower Costs. Linux, which runs on low cost PC hardware, has a significantly lower cost of ownership than UNIX, which is dependent on expensive high cost client machines. Users can look forward to increased performance** at reduced costs by upgrading IRAP RMS™ to run on Linux 64-bit.
Roxar is currently closely partnering with major hardware vendors to enable the E&P industry to run its 3D modeling software on the latest generations of Linux 64-bit compatible PCs and workstations.
IRAP RMS™ comprises 14 fully integrated software modules including mapping, modeling, planning and workflow management tools designed to help geologists, reservoir engineers and geophysicists increase productivity from existing fields and to shorten the discovery-to-production lifecycle.
Tempest™ is a robust, fast, memory efficient reservoir simulation tool. Its user-friendly interface provides powerful 2D and 3D visualization capabilities and it can simulate a wide range of physical processes within one program, including black oil, compositional, dual porosity, steam, coal bed methane and polymer injection.
Roxar creates value for its customers through its Reservoir Interpretation, Reservoir Modeling, Reservoir Simulation, Well and Completion, Production and Process Solutions and Consultancy Services.
** Based on 12 standard tests performed on the IRAP RMS™ 7.4 alpha version using 13 different hardware configurations. IRAP RMS™ was the only application running on the machines whilst testing was taking place. Further information on ongoing benchmarking tests can be found at http://www.roxar.com/benchmark
