Keppel comes onboard Uniquely Singapore Clipper as race partner

Posted: 23 May 2005

Keppel Corporation has become the third race partner to come onboard for the Uniquely Singapore yacht, which will be competing in one of the world’s most prestigious international yachting events, the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race.

Singapore is the first Asian city to join the ten-strong international racing fleet which sails from Liverpool , United Kingdom , on 18 September 2005 . At the end of the fourth leg of the race, in January 2006, the yachts will spend 10 days in Singapore where they will be berthed at Keppel Bay and Sentosa Cove.

On Keppel’s participation, Mr Lim Chee Onn, Executive Chairman of Keppel Corporation Limited said, “It should not surprise some of you, perhaps, that Keppel would come onboard the Uniquely Singapore Clipper as a race partner. We are much akin to what Clipper is celebrated for, across the world – the spirit of adventure and achievement; passion; a global outlook and outreach which is inclusive of people from all walks of life, as long as they rise to challenge.”

Singapore ’s involvement in the nation versus nation Clipper 05-06 Race has been secured by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Fast Track Sailing, the exclusive global commercial and media partner for the event. Sentosa and PSA International were the first two Race Partners of ‘Uniquely Singapore’.

The 68-foot Uniquely Singapore yacht will be manned by a crew of 18 and will act as Singapore ’s roving tourism ambassador. Through the local crew members and hosted festival villages along the seven-leg route, the rest of the world can get a taste of Singapore .

Mr Lim Chee Onn added,”Come January 2006, when the Clipper fleet is in Singapore, their presence in Keppel Bay will lend further colour to this idyllic waterfront landscape that you see here.

“It cannot be more well-timed as this whole waterfront precinct will by then enter into a new phase, when we will see an exciting lifestyle hub at the Harbourfront, Sentosa and Keppel Bay being further developed here. The world with their eyes on the Clipper fleet will help promote Singapore as one of Asia ’s leading tourist destinations.”

At the helm of the Uniquely Singapore yacht is recently-appointed skipper from Australia , Mr Richard Falk (37), who is presently in Singapore . The Skipper was at hand to welcome Keppel as race partner at the announcement cocktail party held by the sea at the promenade fronting Keppel Bay .
