Saudi Aramco wins 8th Patent for 2005

Saudi Aramco won its eighth patent for 2005 from the Nigerian Patent Office for its technology “Water Cut Rate of Change (WCRC) Analytical Method,” by Dr. Abdulla H. Al-Ghamdi of the Reservoir Description and Simulation Department. The invention is also published by the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Water cut, which is the water fraction of the total fluids produced from a well, is constantly measured. This invention uses historical water cut measurements to identify wells that could be subject to early water production.
It also dramatically reduces the time required to analyze and interpret data from areas of high- and hyper-water production.
According to Al-Ghamdi, his WCRC method has several applications, including identification of reservoir flow channels and barriers and short-term prediction of water flood progress and percentage of swept oil.
"The WCRC method can be used by geologists to improve reservoir characterization and modeling," Al-Ghamdi said. "It provides both reservoir management and production engineers with a tool to closely monitor water encroachment and predicts short-term water production behavior."
