A 24-hour oil spill response centre for the Gulf region is to be established under a memorandum of understanding signed last month.

Seacor Environmental Services’ Fujairah-based subsidiary SESME will immediately begin a multi-phase development programme to establish the centre.

Abdulla Nasser Al-Suwaidi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Exploration and Production Director, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) met Randall Blank, President and Chief Executive Officer of Seacor Environmental Services to acknowledge the signing.

The SESME Oil Spill Response Centre will be located on the Mussaffah channel, in Abu Dhabi, with direct access to a deep water jetty, the international road system and Abu Dhabi airport. The SESME Centre will open with a capability of providing oil spill response equipment, skilled manpower and response related training services throughout the Gulf region.

Blank presented plans for the inauguration of the new centre and further defined SESME’s primary objective to provide professional response services in the Gulf through access to their inventory of international response resources, personnel and response contractors.

Initial activities will include SESME employing additional full-time response personnel and purchasing new state of the art oil spill response equipment. A principal service offered through the new Centre is to provide response related training to government, industry and private sector employees.

Adnoc is supporting the development of this service because it provides a vital link to the additional international resources required to achieve their mission to protect the marine environment and shorelines of Abu Dhabi.

“SEACOR is fully committed to stand with and support Adnoc to combat major oil pollution incidents,” a spokesman said.

SES is the Environmental Services Division of SEACOR Holdings Inc., a diversified oilfield and marine services group quoted on the New York Stock Exchange.

SEACOR recently acquired Era Aviation, a provider of helicopter services in North America and Seabulk International, a provider of marine support and transportation services, primarily to the energy and chemical industries. Combined 2004 turnover was approximately $1 billion.

SESME and its affiliated companies are the international providers for SES whose other operations are in the Caspian Sea Region, South America , South East Asia , West Africa and Russia . SES customers include some of the world’s largest international oil and gas and marine transportation companies both in the private and public sectors.
