Houlder Limited announces an award of design and engineering services for the conversion work on the Brazil based Subsea 7 vessel the Kommandor 3000. The contract for the upgrade includes naval architecture for determining the hull modifications and stability, and structural engineering work for the new lay deck. Work starts immediately in two of the Houlder UK offices, London and Tyneside, and will complete in November 2005. The work has been commissioned following Subsea 7 and Technip securing an EPIC (Engineering, Pr ocurement, Installation and Commissioning) contract from Petróleo Brasileiro S.A (Petrobras), announced earlier this year.

The Kommandor 3000 will be upgraded to have a top tension capacity of 300 tonnes for laying flexible pipe. This involves the removal of the present triple flexible pipelay system, and replacement with a larger capacity centreline lay system. The lay deck will be removed and replaced with a new extended lay deck to accommodate the pipe tensioners, cranes, A-Frame and diverter sheaves. The vessel will accommodate new A&R winch systems and a retractable table on the main deck.

The Kommandor 3000, once upgraded, will be operating in the Campos Basin , located offshore the state of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . The vessel will be part of the Subsea 7 and Technip work scope to design, manufacture, supply, install, pull and hook up the P52 platform. Operations on the project will take place in water depths of up to 1900 metres, commencing in late 2006.

Rupert Hare, Managing Director of Houlder Limited, stated, “We are delighted to support Subsea 7 on this landmark project. We have spent many years building up a strong relationship with Subsea 7, both through our expertise and completing similar tasks on the Lochnagar.”

Hugo Camerini, K3000 Pr oject Manager, Subsea 7 Brazil, said, “Houlder has the experience and expertise to meet Subsea 7 specifications, and have been very proactive in producing solutions to meet our requirements. They have shown themselves to be in line with Subsea 7 regarding the scope of work, and are familiar with the K3000 from previous projects and similar jobs carried out on the Locknagar.”
