Drilling leaders look for secrets of benchmark success

A group of leaders in drilling and completions performance are to meet with the man dubbed "the father of benchmarking", Dr. Robert Camp, in Aberdeen to learn the lessons from 20 years of performance improvement in the manufacturing and service sectors.

New York based Dr. Camp is a world class consultant and author of the seminal 1989 book, " Benchmarking: The Search for Industry Best Practices that Lead to Superior Performance". He will meet Drilling and Completions Managers from a wide range of Oil Companies at the annual meeting of the Rushmore Reviews in November.

The benchmarking technique, which was pioneered by Dr. Camp at Xerox in the 1980’s, involves finding the best performing company for a specific business process and then analysing what they do differently to achieve their leading results.

The Rushmore Reviews bring together over 150 Oil Companies from 70 countries to share data on drilling and completions performance, data which helps each of these companies to better understand and improve their own operations.

Kent Springer, California-based Overseas Manager - Drilling Engineering, for Chevron International Exploration and Producing explained the reasons for their long-term participation in the Reviews, and the benefits that participation brings to Chevron.

"Chevron is a proponent of both internal and external benchmarking of drilling performance. Internal benchmarking is beneficial as we compare performance of our projects worldwide against our internal standards," he said. "External benchmarking helps us compare performance against our worldwide peers and identify areas where we can improve. Additionally, we use benchmarking data to assist in our evaluation of new venture projects where our internal data might be limited. The Rushmore Reviews are key to both of our internal and external benchmarking processes."

The meeting is held at the Marcliffe of Pitfodels Hotel in Aberdeen on the 8 th and 9 th November 2005 and will be attended by managers and performance specialists from all around the world representing the major multi-nationals such as BP, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Total and Eni as well as smaller companies such as Kerr McGee, Talisman, Petro-Canada and many others.

“We were thrilled to be able to get such an eminent figure in the world of benchmarking to our meeting” said Helen Rushmore, Sales and Marketing Director of Rushmore Reviews. “Although most of the Oil Companies have been benchmarking with us for over 10 years there is still a lot more potential value to be gained from this technique and Dr. Camp is probably the best person in the world to help us achieve this”.

Founded in 1989 by a group of Operators, the Rushmore Reviews publish data on over 20,000 wells and completions worldwide which allow participating companies to benchmark their own performance as well as help them set performance improvement agendas.

In the last few years the Rushmore Reviews have seen a significant increase in corporate long term contracts, amounting to over USD 1.5 million being awarded by operators such as Anadarko, Apache, BG, BHP, BP, Burlington, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Devon, DONG, Eni, EOG, Gaz de France, Kerr McGee, Marathon, Murphy, Nexen, Norsk Hydro, OMV, Petronas Carigali, Pioneer, Premier, Roc Oil, RWE-Dea, Sasol, Shell, Statoil, Talisman, TNK-BP, Total, Tullow, Woodside, Unocal, Venture, Wintershall and members of the Sakhalin Island development consortium.

Eigil Hannestad, well construction manager of Copenhagen-based DONG E&P, said, "Being a relatively small drilling operator, currently only working in the Danish part of the North Sea , DONG E&P Well Construction feels it is important to us to compare our performance with other operators. We find the results achieved in Norway , United Kingdom and Holland particularly interesting and the Rushmore Reviews benchmark study has provided us with relevant information for these areas."

He said DONG used the Reviews actively for both internal goal setting and in its efforts to establish external alliances. "Based on this, it was quite natural to renew our participation with a 3-year contract," Hannestad added.
