Who will win the Oil Oscars this year?
Thousands of votes continue to mount. Tensions are building. But the winner won’t be announced until next month.
For the first time, the 5 th Excellence in Energy Awards, the Middle East ’s Oil Oscars will be unveiled in Doha , Qatar .
The awards have the patronage of HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Second Deputy Minister of Energy and Industry, and are supported by platinum sponsors Qatar Airways and Qatar Duty Free. Schlumberger and Dolphin energy are the gold and silver sponsors.
Eileen Michael, Pipeline Magazine’s Publisher, said: “It is a must-go event for companies in the Middle East . It is for this reason that Pipeline proudly honours those who actively strive to promote excellence in the energy sector.”
“We strongly feel that it is timely to hold the energy awards in Qatar this year. Although Qatar is the smallest oil producing OAPEC member, it is a giant with its natural gas mega gas-to-liquids projects. We believe and support its vision to be the GTL capital of the world by 2010.”
When completed, Qatar ’s Oryx GTL project will be the most technically advanced gas-to-liquids plant in the world, using around 330 million cubic feet per day of lean gas from Al Khaleej project in Qatar ’s North Gas Field as feedstock to produce 34,000 barrels per day of liquids.
Al Attiyah said: “Oil and gas remains the mainstay of the Qatari economy and it is highly appropriated that the country hosts an awards ceremony which will see leading executives attending from all sections of the industry throughout the region.”
The awards just get bigger and better with the addition of two new categories:
• Best in Project Finance
• Best Innovation in Future Fuels
Other award categories cover:
• Overall Excellence in Energy
• Project of the Year
• Regional Industry Innovator
• Best Company in Health and Safety
• Best Company in Environment
• Best Company in Industry Technology

• Best Company in Industry Services.
Last year’s winners included Saudi Aramco; RasGas; Halliburton; Baker Hughes Inteq; Shell; Dolphin Energy; Al Mansoori Specialized Engineering; Schlumberger; and J. Ray McDermott. HE Yousef Omar Bin Yousef received the Industry Innovator award.
Previous patrons included HE Obeid bin Saif Al Nassiri, UAE Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, for the 3 rd Energy Awards; HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President, Department of Civil Action, Government of Dubai and Chairman of the Emirates Group, for the 4 th Energy Awards.
“The support of our patrons demonstrates the very welcome reception the Excellence in Energy Awards receives all over the Middle East, said Michael. “For this year’s ceremony, Qatar is the obvious choice with its buoyant energy sector.”
Due to astounding response from the energy industry, the 2006 Excellence in Energy Awards is already booked for Abu Dhabi on 7 December 2006 . The 2006 awards will coincide with Gastech 2006, one of world’s biggest exhibitions featuring over 6,000 senior gas industry decision makers.
