Vela International Marine has marked a milestone in its history, achieving 12 months without a lost time incident aboard its 21 VLCC (very large crude carrier) vessels. This amounts to 4.4 million man-hours without incurring an injury that would cause a seaman to be absent from work the day following the injury.
"We wanted to go beyond our current programmes to create a culture of safety, both onboard and ashore," said Saleh K'aki, President and CEO of Vela.
This drive for safety enhancement led Vela to turn to a "behavioural safety process" approach. Vela decided that Behavioural Accident Prevention Process from Behavioural Science Technology, would be the best way to achieve continuous safety improvement.
Observations of crews at work, positive reinforcement of good practices and non-judgmental guidance when 'at risk' behaviour is observed form the core of BAPP. In addition, the process is entirely anonymous and blame free.
K'aki emphasised that the process provides continuous improvements in safety. "We see Vela continuing to be an industry leader in tanker safety," he said.
Over 700 crew and officers have undergone observer training aboard Vela's Ships and in locations including the Philippines , Dubai , London , and Poland . This has resulted in a steady stream of trained observers joining Vela vessels and able to take the place of departing observers.
