AnTech's
new downhole memory sensors offer improved reliability

Award-winning COLT to Debut April 8-9th at SPE/ICoTA Coiled
Tubing Conference and Exhibition at Stand No. 314 in Houston
EXETER, England — AnTech Ltd, a specialist
engineering design and manufacturing company serving the international
upstream oil and gas industries, announced the latest additions
to its range of downhole memory sensors with the launch of two new
products: the Memory Pressure/Temperature Sensor and the Memory
Load/Torque Sensor.
Improved Reliability with Shock-Resistant Electronics
Although each tool plays a distinctly different role in
gathering downhole data for a wide range of pumping operations,
including those involving coiled tubing runs, the tools share a
number of common features that offer users distinct benefits. In
order to improve reliability, AnTech’s memory tools were developed
with several innovative features.
Following tests in the field and on a special table designed to
test the effects of increasing levels of vibration, AnTech devised
a way to eliminate resonance on the electronics board by mounting
it on the tool in a more secure fashion.
This means that each memory tool’s electronics are completely
protected against shock, dramatically improving their reliability
in the rigorous downhole environment.
Secondly, the tools were designed with a straight flow path through
the centre of the tool, which further reduces pressure losses and
vibration. Because the tools are very short, making up coiled tubing
is much faster and easier.
Downhole readings are recorded into the tool’s memory, and
easily downloaded to a PC for careful analysis.
The new tools feature AnTech’s easy-to-use software, which
reduces the time required to train engineers and to set up the operation.
The standard ratings of AnTech’s memory tools are 10,000psi
and 150°C. The diameter of the tools ranges from 1-11/16”
to 4-3/4”.
Each sensor is field-proven in highly disparate environments, having
been successfully used by operators in Alaska, Canada, the Middle
East, Denmark and the North Sea.
Memory pressure/temperature sensor takes critical downhole
Readings The AnTech Memory Pressure/Temperature Sensor uses strain
gauge pressure transducers that make it possible to take both pressure
and temperature readings simultaneously. The straight through-flow
path is particularly useful for running the tool when a ball must
be dropped.
Because its electronics are completely protected against shock,
the Memory Pressure/Temperature Sensor can be run easily with drilling
tools, and for similar high shock operations, such as jarring. Further,
it is available equipped with either one or two sensors, depending
on operator requirements.
Memory load/torque sensor measures impact of load on CT
string downhole
It’s well-known throughout the drilling industry
that data on how a coiled tubing string is affected by a downhole
load is highly indicative of what is taking place downhole. This
is particularly important when the string is operating in a highly
deviated or horizontal well. Unfortunately, indications of movement
experienced by the string taken at surface do not accurately reflect
activity downhole.
The Memory Load/Torque Sensor was designed to provide a solution
to the problem of gathering accurate data on how the string is behaving
in response to the load and other forces, including tension, compression
and torque. Armed with this downhole data, the engineer can then
compare it with surface measurements and operating procedures. In
this way, he will have a clearer, more accurate picture of how well
the operation is proceeding, and whether critical adjustments should
be made.
The highly versatile Memory Load/Torque Sensor is a 0.7”
bore-through tool that provides variable sampling rates to meet
specific customer requirements. As the system is insensitive to
bends in the well, the data collected is not affected, ensuring
that all measurements are accurate. It is available in several configurations:
a) with both types of sensors, or b) with a torque or load sensor,
which compensates for pressure effects.
Sensors using wireline telemetry for surface readouts available
In the event that a surface readout is required, AnTech
can provide the Memory Pressure/Temperature Sensor and the Memory
Load/Torque Sensor with a wireline telemetry system, in place of
the downhole memory. COLT Debuts at SPE/ICoTA Tradeshow in Houston
– Stand 314 In addition to its selection of innovative coiled
tubing tools, visitors to the forthcoming SPE/IcoTA Coiled Tubing
Conference and Exhibition on April 8-9th in Houston will have the
opportunity to view the first public demonstration of the COLT.
The COLT is AnTech’s electrically controlled coiled tubing
drilling bottom hole assembly that offers significant benefits to
drilling contractors seeking to access natural gas reservoirs. AnTech
won a Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation last
year from Hart’s E & P magazine in the Drilling –
Downhole Category in recognition of the new gas well drilling system.
AnTech will be exhibiting at Stand No. 314 throughout the conference.
