Oracle9i
database sets new performance record

Organisations in the Middle East Can Expect Unlimited Performance
and Scalability from Oracle9i Database
Dubai, UAE — Oracle Corporation, the world's
largest enterprise software company, today announced a new world
record APB-1 OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) benchmark for Oracle9i
Database Release 2 with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters. According
to independent benchmark auditor DSS Lab, Oracle achieved 85,719
analytical queries per minute (AQM), which resulted in 75 times
faster performance than Hyperion’s best result of 1,135 AQM
running on IBM hardware.1
“With this benchmark Oracle has really raised the bar on
concurrent user support for OLAP applications,” said George
Spofford, Chief Architect of DSS Lab. “Ten thousand concurrent
active users on a single OLAP application, while sustaining such
a high server throughput, is a milestone in the business intelligence
world.”
Using Oracle9i Real Application Clusters running on a 4-node cluster
of HP rp7400 Servers with HP-UX 11i operating system, this newest
benchmark demonstrates the OLAP capabilities of Oracle9i Database
and it’s ability to cost-effectively scale to support an unlimited
number of concurrent users performing complex queries.
As part of an ongoing effort by HP and Oracle to provide a world-class
platform for running advanced analytic applications, this benchmark
illustrates that sophisticated analysis no longer has to be limited
to a few specialised users within a company.
Using the embedded OLAP engine in Oracle9i Database, information
technology professionals can now give employees from all levels
of an organisation the ability to perform sophisticated data analysis.
Integrated Analytical Processing Provides Cost Savings
Until the introduction of Oracle9i Database, most companies were
required to maintain separate analytical processing servers that
were fed data from a central data warehouse in order to conduct
data-intensive operations such as OLAP, extract, transform and load
(ETL), and Data Mining.
Such environments often made it very difficult, slow and costly
to develop applications that incorporated the benefits of analytics
into a company’s overall business flow.
Several years ago, Oracle undertook the challenge of eliminating
these inefficiencies by becoming the first vendor to deliver embedded
OLAP and Data Mining engines in Oracle9i Database.
By performing analytics closest to the data – inside the
database – customers can benefit from lower integration costs,
improved manageability and security, and higher performance for
complex multidimensional analysis.
“Not only are data volumes and user populations growing at
extraordinary rates, but analytical requirements are rapidly advancing
in scale and complexity based on the need for companies to have
up-to-the-minute data accessible to employees – all of this
results in new challenges for scalability,” said Richard Winter,
President and CEO for Winter Corporation. “No company can
afford to lose control of their data in today’s ever more
demanding environment. With Oracle9i Database’s integrated
analytical functions, Oracle allows data warehousing customers to
cope with these rising requirements with a well-integrated infrastructure
designed for scalability.”
Oracle9i Real Application Clusters for Scalable Data Warehousing
By using Oracle’s industry-leading database clustering technology,
Oracle9i Real Application Clusters, customers can lower their IT
costs and achieve even greater scalability and performance for complex
business intelligence analysis by starting with a single, low-cost
computer and then adding more computers – with no application
changes – as their business needs change.
“Oracle9i Database’s embedded OLAP engine is a technology
breakthrough that enables the delivery of business intelligence
throughout a company in real-time,” said Ayman Abouseif, Senior
Marketing Director for Middle East, Africa, Eastern and Central
Europe, Oracle Corporation. “This new world record demonstrates
the scalability and performance benefits of having a truly embedded
OLAP engine in the database. Only Oracle9i Real Application Clusters
can scale OLAP processing across a cluster of low-cost computers.”
