Maxtor's SATA drives compatible with Intel's new chipset

Posted: 21 April 2003

Maxtor hits the road with Intel to educate integrators, VARs and system builders on benefits of SATA products and system designs

Dubai, UAE — Maxtor Corporation, a worldwide leader in hard disk drives, announced that the company’s Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives have completed compatibility testing with Intel’s 875P chipset for the Pentium 4 processor.

Tests were done in both Intel and Maxtor labs. OEMs, solution providers and system builders now have a variety of pre-tested SATA combinations for building PCs, RAID arrays and near-line storage applications. Included in many 875P platforms is Intel RAID technology that supports high-performance RAID arrays for SATA hard disk drives.

“Intel and Maxtor continue to share the vision of the Serial ATA transition delivering new value and capabilities to the PC and near-line storage market segments.

Both companies have been active in the SATA working group and have worked together closely on compatibility testing,” said Knut Grimsrud, Serial ATA Working Group chairman and Intel senior principal engineer.

“Today, Serial ATA is enabling new applications and simplifying system designs. By combining our new Intel 875P chipset, with its integrated SATA and RAID capabilities, with Maxtor’s family of SATA hard drives, VARs can serve a variety of market needs.”

SATA’s point-to-point storage interface will provide accelerated data transfer rates over the next 10 years. Maxtor SATA drives also deliver high-performance transfer rates of up to 1.5Gbps and provide cyclical redundancy checking (CRC) for increased data integrity.

In a PC environment, users can now plug Maxtor SATA drives directly into an Intel D875PBZ desktop board; no adapter card is required. Replacing the flat parallel ribbon cable with a thin Serial cable also allows better airflow for cooling, which is an important consideration in today’s new system designs.

The D875PBZ desktop board is available at resellers and integrators worldwide.

“An attractive market for Serial ATA is near-line storage,” said Stephen DiFranco, vice president of corporate marketing at Maxtor. “In an efficient enterprise, fixed content should be stored on cost-effective, near-line systems designed for fast access times. When recalled, the data must be restored in seconds, not days. By using Maxtor’s Serial ATA hard drives and Intel’s chipset, system builders can offer customers a cost-effective, near-line storage alternative.”

Maxtor’s 7200-RPM SATA drives feature the fastest performance in their class and the highest capacity available on a SATA drive today
