ExxonMobil Contributes $200,000 to African-American College Scholarships

Posted: 2 May 2003

Through this grant, about 50 HBCU students will get scholarships

IRVING, Texas — ExxonMobil Foundation today announced a $200,000 donation to the Tom Joyner Foundation to help some 50 students attending eleven Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

This marks the third consecutive year that ExxonMobil has provided this support, now totaling $600,000. The Tom Joyner Foundation provides money directly to HBCUs to help students complete their higher education.

Each month, the Tom Joyner Foundation selects a specific HBCU that will receive funds in order to award financial scholarships to deserving students.

The scholarships are granted through the college or university's financial aid department based on students' financial needs and academic achievements.

Scholarship recipients will be announced monthly during a live radio broadcast of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, syndicated in over 100 markets across the United States that reach more than seven million listeners.

"Thanks to ExxonMobil's support, we will continue our efforts to promote higher education and provide Historical Black Colleges and Universities with money for scholarships," said Tom Joyner, founder of the Tom Joyner Foundation and host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

With ExxonMobil's contribution, the Tom Joyner Foundation will provide $18,000 monthly for scholarships to an HBCU selected by the Foundation over a period of eleven months.

In addition to providing financial assistance to these educational institutes, ExxonMobil's donation will also help more African-American students complete their higher education and reduce student drop-out rates of participating HBCUs as a result of financial strain.

"ExxonMobil remains committed to supporting higher education, and we are extremely pleased to partner with the Tom Joyner Foundation to provide much needed funding to these well-respected universities and their students," said Kenneth P. Cohen, vice president for public affairs, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and chairman, ExxonMobil Foundation.

"We applaud the Tom Joyner Foundation for their ongoing dedication and leadership within the African-American community and look forward to embarking on this partnership to help open more doors for students pursing higher education."

Founded by Tom Joyner, the Tom Joyner Foundation is a charitable 501c3 non-profit organization started in 1997 for the sake of African-American students in need at Historical Black Colleges and Universities across the nation.

The Foundation has raised more than $17 million to date for this single cause.

ExxonMobil Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of the Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States.

The Foundation engages in a broad range of philanthropic activities focusing on the communities where Exxon Mobil Corporation has significant operations.

In addition, the Foundation supports research and dissemination on selected topics of national interest to the energy industry. Focus areas include education, health and environment.

In 2002, ExxonMobil Foundation, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and its divisions and affiliates provided $98 million in contributions worldwide, with more than $41 million dedicated to education. (BUSINESS WIRE)
