HOUSTON, Texas — Halliburton Energy Services
product service line Security DBS, today announced the release of
FM3000, an advanced PDC drill bit that combines Force Management,
Dynamics Optimisation, and Advanced PDC Cutter Technology.
Because of their unique design and analytical software, the drill
bits can be customised to any drilling application. FM3000 is designed
to improve drilling performance, delivering higher rates of penetration
(ROP) without compromising the life of the bit. Halliburton Energy
Services is a business unit of Halliburton.
"Customers are continuously seeking better ROP, longer bit
life and better directional properties to deliver lower cost per
foot drilled," said Randy Young, vice president, Halliburton
Energy Services, Security DBS. "FM3000 technology is the most
advanced design process in PDC drill bit manufacturing available
today. This technology is a perfect example of Halliburton's commitment
to continuously develop breakthrough technology for the industry."
Force Management is a design feature of the PDC bit cutting structure
using state-of-the-art Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Precise
three-dimensional definition of cutter interaction with the rock
allows the cutter forces to be harnessed to maximise drilling efficiency.
Dynamics optimisation is a design feature incorporating a precise
software model of the PDC bits drilling dynamics. This feature prolongs
cutter life and enhances the bit's directional properties.
Advanced PDC cutter technology, is the product of Security DBS's
continuous research and development program in PDC cutter manufacturing.
The research program has led to advances in the cutter manufacturing
processes, cutter testing techniques, selection of diamond grades
and diamond table thickness.
Security DBS has overcome the historical compromise of increasing
cutter abrasion resistance with decreasing cutter impact resistance.
Advanced Cutter Technology allows optimised cutter specifications
for each drilling application
The combination of these three technologies has increased PDC bit
durability while sustaining aggressive drilling rates. To date,
Security DBS has run more than 120 prototypes of the FM3000 technology.
Performance has improved significantly over today's standards: 20 per cent
improvement in drilling rate, 50 per cent improvement in footage drilled
has been recorded. This translates into a significant reduction
in drilling costs.
The FM3000 PDC bit is a key component of Sperry-Sun's FullDrift
suite of drilling tools. Sperry-Sun and Security DBS have developed
a matched drilling system that uses the "point-the-bit"
principal to ensure that the bit steering forces are always along
the wellbore axis as opposed to steering by applying side forces
on the drill bit.
The FM3000 bit design philosophy also guarantees that each extended
gauge PDC FullDrift bit is tailored for each drilling application.
