Halliburton
technology for Gulf of Mexico
Posted: 7 May 2003
HOUSTON, Texas — Halliburton's Integrated
Solutions Group has successfully integrated the products and services
of several Halliburton product service lines to develop a well system
that minimises the client's initial capital investment and allows
stacked pay zones to be accessed without the use of a rig.
In the process, a monobore completion was utilised — the
first known installation in the Gulf of Mexico where the Surface
Controlled Subsurface Safety Valve (SCSSV) is run as an integral
part of the production casing and the primary cement job is performed
through the safety valve.
Halliburton's challenge was to develop a cost-effective well system
compatible with multiple, high-rate, sand-controlled completions
for stacked pay intervals.
The reserve potential of the prospective wells was such that conventional
drilling and completion methods would have made the wells cost prohibitive.
"Working with the client, Petsec Energy Inc., we were able
to leverage some of our technologies and equipment such as the CrimsonSM
Vent Screen Completion Service and the Stim Star II vessel with
our proprietary design programs and project management skills to
improve reserve recovery," said Jackie Colwell, commercialisation
manager, Halliburton Energy Services.
The Crimson Vent Screen Completion Service contributed a great
deal to the success of the project. This comprehensive vent screen
completion method uses existing sand control technology and integrates
Halliburton equipment and services to create value for customers.
The Crimson Vent Screen Completions resulted in high rate completions
while leaving access to additional pay zones up the hole. Selection
of the Crimson Vent Screen system for the completions allowed the
well to be "downsized" from conventional casing schemes
and resulted in additional time and cost savings.
"A major goal of Petsec Energy Inc. is to use the skills,
experience, products and techniques of its service providers as
a positive resource," said Norman Fakier, vice president of
Operations, Petsec Energy Inc. "This multi-well project brought
to bear several Halliburton product service lines using their Integrated
Solutions Group as the focal point. The results were excellent and
very much appreciated."
At completion of the three-well project, the client had saved a
significant amount of money and 105 days of operational time as
compared to conventional methods. Additional savings will accrue
as the wells are re-completed to upper pay sands with rigless installation
of additional Crimson Vent Screen completions.
