Shell
and IMD strengthen links
Posted: 8 May 2003
The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies announced today a new
development in its partnership with leading business school, IMD,
based in Lausanne, Switzerland, inaugurating the Shell Professorial
Chair in Sustainable Business Growth.
The post will be held by Professor Bala Chakravarthy.
It is the first Chair of its kind and Professor Chakravarthy says
research efforts will focus on examining the issues and dilemmas
that business leaders must address to grow their businesses both
profitably and sustainably.
“Growth is valued only when it is profitable, but achieving
both growth and profitability simultaneously is hard. Moreover,
growth may consume scarce resources, relocate assets and people,
or generate toxic by-products. Growth and sustainability may also
not always go hand in hand. Translating the rhetoric around growth
and sustainability into actions at the operating level of the firm
is a key leadership challenge” Chakravarthy said.
Speaking today at the inauguration ceremony at IMD, Sir Philip
Watts, Chairman of the Committee of Managing Directors of the Royal
Dutch/Shell Group of Companies said: “At Shell we believe
that leadership education is a vital part of business success. We
are investing in the development of our future leaders across the
world. IMD helps us provide the highest quality education that is
properly linked to the real day-to-day business challenges our staff
face. And so I am delighted further to cement our link with IMD
in this way today.”
IMD President, Dr Peter Lorange, said: “IMD is dedicated
to a ‘Real World, Real Learning’ approach to executive
development. This means that we must be both focused at all times
on practical relevance in our research and teaching, and, more importantly,
connected to the real world through select strategic partnerships.
Our partnership with Shell is an exemplar in this regard. The endowment
of a Shell Chair at IMD is yet another testimony to our very rich
links with the company.”
As well as the new Chair, IMD provides executive leadership development
programmes for Shell’s future senior managers and engages
in research projects of common interest.
IMD is an independent not-for-profit foundation located in Lausanne,
Switzerland. For over 50 years it has trained managers of leading
international companies. Its proven ‘Real World. Real Learning’
philosophy is designed to enhance leadership in every area of management.
IMD helps executives and companies find new and innovative ways
in which to sustain global competitiveness.
