  Schlumberger software for Dalhousie University

Posted: 20 May 2003

Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) today announced that it has contributed a $4 million (USD) package of leading-edge exploration and production (E&P) and simulation technology to Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The software is being used for research and to support training students on how to model complex subsurface oil and gas reservoirs and to simulate fluid flow in the reservoirs. Modeling is an important step when exploring and drilling for oil and gas and reservoir simulation is key to maximise production.

"The Schlumberger software provides our students, researchers and faculty with up-to-the-minute tools for pursuing cutting-edge petroleum research and education," said Dr. Tom Traves, president of Dalhousie University. "Exposing students to the top technology that Schlumberger is providing will prepare them to become effective contributors in the very dynamic energy industry."

The Dalhousie University software package includes licenses comprising a complete suite of GeoFrame applications for reservoir characterisation in the geological, geophysical, mapping and petrophysical domain; ECLIPSE reservoir simulation software; and software for maintaining the GeoFrame UNIX user environment and performing project data management. Licenses of Merak Peep® economic evaluation and decline analysis software and Merak PetroDesk desktop integration tool, which are part of the Merak value and risk suite of software products, are also part of this program.

"Today we are introducing new technology to the E&P industry that changes the way oilfields are discovered, developed and produced," said Robert Drummond, general manager for Atlantic and Eastern Canada, Schlumberger Canada Limited. "The Schlumberger industry-standard software will accelerate research and provide students with enhanced educational experiences. We believe researchers and students can make valuable contributions to our industry if they have access to the most advanced, leading-edge software technology. Our software will allow them to gain new insights into reservoir science and prepare them for careers in earth sciences."

The Schlumberger Worldwide University Software Program is part of a global Schlumberger initiative that began in 1998, with the idea of providing students and staff of Earth Sciences Departments all over the world with hands-on experience of E&P and simulation software.

The program offers software developed and marketed by SIS to selected colleges and universities at minimal cost, providing three-year renewable licenses, software maintenance, training and technical support.

Universities selected for the program can use the software to instruct students as part of a course curriculum or to conduct academic research.

The software is not intended for commercial use by the university.

Schlumberger Canada Limited is a proud supporter of post-secondary education in Atlantic and Eastern Canada. In addition to awarding more than $40,000 annually to students, local recruiting has offered more than a hundred global career opportunities to the region's youth.
