OPS Group helps Canada-Alaska sea kayak team

Posted: 3 June 2003

OPS Group Ltd, a leading provider of highly qualified, specialist personnel to the international oil and gas industry, announced it is lending a helping hand to the Interventure sea kayak team in support of its imminent 1,000-mile kayaking challenge from Canada to Alaska.

Expedition to Launch on June 9th
On June 9th, a team of 10 paraplegic and able-bodied sea kayakers will be the first inclusive team to embark on the 1,000 mile journey from Vancouver, British Columbia to Juneau, Alaska.

The three-month journey will see the team paddle their way along the historic “Inside Passage” up the coast of British Columbia to the fjords and glacier-draped mountains of Alaska.

“As this is the European Year of the Disabled, we’re very excited to be supporting such an historic expedition. To take on this challenge, with the many unexpected hurdles posed by travelling through the wilderness, requires an incredible amount of courage. It is truly heroic, and we wish the Interventure team every success for a safe journey,” said Steve Pryor, Managing Director of OPS Group Ltd, one of the primary sponsors of the expedition.

While most of the team-members live in northeast Scotland, others are from England and Wales.

Interventure founder and chairwoman Karen Paul is employed in Aberdeen by Shell U.K. Exploration and Production in a Learning and Development role, with a part-time secondment to the Royal Geographical Society on Inclusive Fieldwork and Expeditions, and Mark Bragg is a subsea engineer who, until recently, worked for Kvaerner.

The remaining team-members are: Suresh Paul, Alan Thompson, Susanne Moessner, Fran Pothecary, Pete Gwatkin, Tony Hocking, Adrian Disney and Ian Wilson.

To track the team’s progress throughout their journey, visit either www.opsgrp.com or www.interventure.org.uk where regular updates will be posted.

Alternatively, the team can be contacted direct at canadateam@interventure.org.uk.

Further sponsors and contributions to support the Interventure expedition are welcome, and may be made by contacting Karen Paul, Interventure chairwoman, at karendarke25@hotmail.com.
