Schlumberger opens new facilities in Aberdeen

Posted: 9 June 2003

Schlumberger, a global technology services company, has opened a new, 10,000 square meter facility in Aberdeen, Scotland, as part of its continuing interests in the North Sea region and Global Satellite Services.

The site will house a modern facility for manufacturing satellite terminals and associated equipment; the Turnkey Projects Department responsible for the integration of telecommunication systems; and a center of excellence providing global remote connectivity, satellite-access solutions.

In the coming months, an additional earth station will also be located at the Kirkhill South site, further supporting access to satellite communications anywhere in the world.

Xavier Flinois, executive vice president, SchlumbergerSema, presided at the opening ceremony. "Aberdeen is a key hub serving the global energy industry. Our new, state-of-the-art offices and facilities support connectivity solutions for oil and gas companies operating around the world and demonstrates our commitment to the North Sea area and its role in the global energy industry."

The new Aberdeen complex includes a 1,200-square-meter manufacturing facility for the SpaceTrack antenna systems.

There, a team of Schlumberger satellite engineers designs and produces the full range of SpaceTrack; fixed and stabilized antenna systems, used in establishing lines of communication via satellite from any place in the world to any other location.

With very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology, Schlumberger provides secure, real-time connectivity between remote or distant locations, both on- and offshore, where the terrestrial communications infrastructure is either unavailable or unable to support business processes reliably.

"Expansion of our manufacturing facility is key to meeting the increasing demand for our stabilized antenna systems," said Jean-Michel Rouylou, vice president, Global Connectivity Solutions, SchlumbergerSema. "Major exploration and production frequently takes place in distant, developing, or even high-risk areas of the world where reliable communications are especially critical, and Schlumberger delivers proven and secure solutions."

"Aberdeen is currently the site of our largest global teleport, complementing the additional seven that are strategically located across all continents," said Flinois. "The North Sea region holds some of the world's largest oil and gas reserves, and the demand for secure, remote communications for this energy hub is high. The third earth station in Aberdeen, when complete, will essentially double our bandwidth capacity, so we can offer additional support to energy operators anywhere in the world."

Global and remote connectivity solutions are offered through DeXa.Net, part of the Schlumberger DeXa Suite of Services for information technology infrastructure solutions.

Kirkhill South is also home to Schlumberger Information Solutions' (SIS) European Service Center. In conjunction with DeXa.Net Secure Private Network, the SIS ESC provides a complete offering including both the application services and MPLS connectivity to its global energy customers.
