Dolphin and Qatar University conduct detailed coral study

Posted: 15 June 2003

Dolphin Energy Limited (DEL) is working with the University of Qatar on a detailed survey of coral reefs around Ras Laffan in northern Qatar.

DEL has employed the services of the University’s Scientific and Research Center (SARC) to make a full environmental impact assessment of the area in which its future gas pipelines will be laid.

Yousif Al Khater, Deputy General Manager of DEL in Qatar, said: “We need to determine the current condition of the coral, so that we can organize suitable protection methods along the pipeline routing. As you may imagine, the construction of our various future pipelines will require careful management, in order for us to preserve the local subsea environment.”

Mr Al Khater explained that Dolphin Energy will construct a substantial processing plant in Ras Laffan from 2004 — where the company will process Qatari gas for subsequent transport by pipeline to the UAE, commencing in 2006.

“A major Dolphin objective is to support and indeed sponsor environmental activities in Qatar, such as coral preservation. We are grateful to SARC, and to the University of Qatar, for their enthusiasm and their professional contribution on this important matter,” he added.

Dolphin Energy Limited
Dolphin Energy Limited was created to develop substantial energy projects throughout the GCC. Its objective is to create long-term economic wealth and new business opportunities for citizens, far into the future.

DEL’s major strategic initiative, the Dolphin Project, involves the production and processing of natural gas from Qatar’s North Field, and transportation of the dry gas by pipeline to the UAE, beginning in 2006.

Dolphin Energy’s first energy initiative comes on stream in 4th Quarter 2003, when DEL’s natural gas pipeline from Al Ain to Fujairah is inaugurated.

This pipeline will supply the Union Water and Electricity Company in Fujairah – initially with natural gas from Oman, and subsequently with Dolphin gas from Qatar.
