New
Schlumberger fully rotary steerable system reliable in
hostile environments

PowerDrive Xceed expands operating envelop of rotary steerable
tools and reduces drilling time
Schlumberger Oilfield Services today announced its new PowerDrive
Xceed fully rotational steerable system that operates independent
of the downhole environment.
The unique capabilities of the PowerDrive Xceed system allow it
to economically outperform other rotary steerable systems in harsh
environments.
Recent field trials of the system in the Gulf of Mexico, Middle
East, West Africa and the North Sea have shown consistent steering
responses were achieved in various trajectories with sections drilled
in one run. Drilling time was reduced by as much as 50 per cent.
“PowerDrive Xceed delivered our required doglegs in unconsolidated
formation,” said Emmanuel PRADIE, Head of Drilling & Completions
Engineering, TotalFinaElf E&P, Angola. “The well was steered
on plan with PowerDrive Xceed providing the functionality we needed
in this challenging environment.”
The PowerDrive Xceed system expands the current operating envelop
for rotary steerable systems.
The fully rotational system, which has no moving parts that interact
with the borehole wall, is not susceptible to shock and vibration,
harsh conditions, drilled solids, soft formations or mud type.
“PowerDrive Xceed is unlike any other tool currently available,”
said Malcolm Keenleyside, business development manager, Drilling
Technologies, Schlumberger Oilfield Services, “With its durable
design, the tool can operate in hotter, tougher and generally more
harsh environments than other rotary steerable tools, and offers
the added bonus of being able to steer a bi-center bit.”
The unique functionality of PowerDrive Xceed allows casing to be
run to bottom without requiring a subsequent hole-opening run. Bi-centered
bits offer reduced risk and reliability benefits.
“As bi-centered drilling increases in deepwater fields, reliability
of rotary steerable systems has become increasingly important in
the decision-making process concerning which system to use,”
said Keenleyside.
The system has been built to raise the benchmark on reliability
and shares a common electronics architecture with the PowerPulse*
measurement while drilling telemetry system. Being linked to the
PowerPulse allows for reliable performance of very long runs.
PowerDrive Xceed is the latest addition to the PowerDrive family
of rotary steerable tools, including PowerDrive Xtra 475. Full rotation
of the entire drill string at the same speed is a distinctive attribute
of the PowerDrive family of tools. This optimizes rate of penetration
(ROP) and reduces drilling time, even in high temperature and abrasive
environments.
