OGS 2003 platform to explore business potential of Iraq

Posted: 29 June 2003

The massive repairs and reconstruction of Iraq’s oil and gas industry will be featured prominently at OGS 2003, the leading oil and gas show in the Middle East, which brings together some of the world’s foremost players in specialised equipment in exploration, drilling, mapping, maintenance, safety & rescue, fighting and corrosion protection.

According to a recent Deutsche Bank report, there could be as much as US$1.5 billion in contracts to upgrade wells and pipes around the oil production facilities in Iraq. The country which has 112.5 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, used to earlier produce 2.8 million barrels of oil per day.

With the modernisation and repair of its infrastructure, experts say that Iraq could be producing an additional million barrels of oil per day. Targeting the oil, gas, petrochemical onshore and offshore industries, OGS will be held at the Dubai Airport Expo from October 12 to 15, 2003.

“Iraq’s three large oilfields are said to be considerably damaged due to its erratic production cycles and reports estimate its pipelines, ports and pumping stations are in a state of disrepair. Exhibitors at OGS 2003 have the requisite expertise to assist in the rebuilding of the Iraqi oil industry. Iraq also sits on 110-trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The show will host international exhibitors who specialise in oilfield drilling equipment; oil and gas pipelines project construction; electrical installation and field instrumentation equipment among other services. OGS 2003 will enable both local and international suppliers to mount a comprehensive presentation of technology, services and equipment to specialist visitors associated with the exploration, extraction, processing, storage and transport of oil and gas especially those from major oil companies who have already initiated the process of obtaining service contracts in Iraq,” said David Domoney, Managing Director, International Conferences & Exhibitions (IC&E), organisers of the show.

“Dubai’s geographical location and its reputation as the trading hub of the region will also raise the profile of OGS 2003 as international and regional companies are looking to network with suppliers in the industry and explore opportunities to gain a foothold in Iraq,” he added.

The show is expected to be at least 30 per cent bigger than the previous event with a majority of the leading distributors in the Gulf region having expressed their interest and support for the event.

In keeping with the prevailing regional situation, OGS 2003 will address the growing concerns and awareness for effective security and maintenance in the production fields of the Middle East at OILSEC 2003, the International Security and Maintenance Conference to be held during the show.

The event will also host various other specialised seminars targeted at industry professionals. These will facilitate industry professionals to keep themselves updated and well informed on the recent developments in the field of oil and gas.

Organised by International Conferences & Exhibitions (IC&E) and supported by the UAE Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, OGS 2003 is a key event in the Middle East for suppliers of petroleum equipment and specialist visitors involved in exploration, extraction, processing, storage and transportation of oil and gas.

OGS is the largest and longest established event of its kind serving the Middle East region. Held every two years, it enables local and international suppliers to stage a comprehensive display of the latest technology and services to over 4,000 specialist visitors involved with the exploration, extraction, processing, storage and transportation of oil and gas.

Over 2,500 companies from more than 30 countries have participated in the show since it began in 1984.

These include the biggest names in the industry worldwide as well as national pavilions from: Germany, UK, Canada, China, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Ukraine.
