Metito and Thames Water strategic partnership

Posted: 29 June 2003

Companies to combine world class expertise and deliver regional solutions in water and waste water schemes

UAE-headquartered Metito (Overseas) Limited has announced a new strategic partnership with Thames Water, the world’s third largest water business, that will bring together two global leaders in the provision of world class water and waste water schemes.

The announcement comes just weeks after Thames Water officially announced the launch of business operations in the UAE as their base for delivering services across the Gulf.

The new alliance, recognised by a formal Memorandum of Understanding between the two companies, will bring major business benefits and opportunities to both Metito and Thames Water.

It gives Thames Water a strong regional partner with over 40 years experience in water, waste water and desalination technology. For Metito it provides access to the experience of a global giant in the development and operation of large concession projects.

Making the announcement, Metito Managing Director, Mr. Fady Juez, said: “As a company Metito believes in the power of partnership and finding the right partner to help us further develop our regional and international business.

“This new strategic agreement defines how our two companies will be working together in the region to help meet the constant growth in demand for technologically advanced solutions for delivering modern water and waste water schemes.

“Both Thames Water and Metito share an unwavering commitment to the environment and I am looking forward to working with them to help further improve the levels of recycling and water conservation in one of the most arid regions in the world.”

In the last 50 years the world’s population has doubled but water consumption has quadrupled. This is why sustainable development and efficient management of scarce water resources is one of the most important challenges for the public and private sectors around the world.

Thames Water’s GCC Regional Director, Mr. Eryl Edwards, said: “After years of developing relationships in the region Thames Water is of the opinion that we both have the technological expertise, skills base and experience to bring real long term development and partnerships.

“This partnership with Metito is part of our strategy to work with the very best regional partners and people wherever we operate around the world. Thames Water is looking forward to utilising the regional knowledge and world class expertise of Metito to help us grow and develop our business in the region.”

The first project that Metito and Thames Water will be operating together is joint responsibility for the operations and maintenance of the Ajman Sewerage concession project for the next 27.5 years.

Thames Water is the number one water company in the US, England and Germany while Metito (Overseas) Limited is the first and foremost water treatment company in the Middle East.

Metito is a world leader in desalination, water and waste water systems with its headquarters for Europe, Africa and Asia in Sharjah where the company employs over 400 project managers, engineers and executives with their support staff.

Over the past 40 years Metito has assembled a world-class international client base that includes Bechtel, Brown & Root, British Gas, Coca Cola, Hilton International, Hyatt, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Snamprogetti and Toshiba.

In the UAE clients include Abu Dhabi Municipality, ADNOC, ADWEA, DEWA, SEWA, Emirates Towers Hotel, Ritz Carlton Hotel, Al Maha Resort, American University of Dubai, the City of Ajman, Borouge, Jebel Ali Free Zone and Marmum Dairy Farm.

Thames Water is the water business of German-based utility giant RWE and covers the whole globe with its water activities.

In excess of 70 million people in 46 countries draw their water supplies and waste disposal facilities from Thames Water.

More than 14,000 employees achieved a turnover of nearly 1.7bn euro last year (2002).
