Middle East Petroleum & Gas Week 2003

Posted: 7 July 2003

Post Iraq war oil market realities to be addressed by top oil conference

The organisers of the annual Middle East Petroleum & Gas Week (MEOW) 2003, have announced that the events originally scheduled for April, have been re-scheduled to September 6-11, 2003 and will take place with resounding support from speakers and sponsors for the new dates.

A total of five different events are planned.

These include the annual Middle East Petroleum & Gas Conference (MPGC 2003) on September 7-9, and four other events covering such specialist areas as strategy, Gas and LNG (MEGas 2003) and lubricants (LUBES 2003). These are described below:

MPGC 2003
MPGC is the week’s flagship event and the Middle East’s most internationally acclaimed oil conference, being held in Dubai for the fourth time in its eleven-year history.

MPGC 2003 will be the region’s first oil conference after the war to address issues relating to inter-alia, the re-emergence of Iraq’s oil industry, prospects for the production of Iraqi oil in the short term and in the next 3-5 years, possible destinations for Iraq’s exports, prospects for reconstruction of the Iraqi refining industry and the possible impact on product balances in both the Atlantic Basin and East of Suez oil markets.

Kicking off the week’s activities, a whole galaxy of oil industry stars will address MPGC 2003, including Mr. Peter Robertson, Vice-Chairman of ChevronTexaco Corporation who will deliver a Keynote Address and HE Dr Alvaro Silva-Calderon, Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Mr. Claude Mandil, Executive-Director of the Paris based International Energy Agency (IEA) for a special “OPEC-IEA” session.

This session, the first of its kind, will define a new path of cooperation between the consumers and producers.

The cooperation between OPEC and the International Energy Agency has been unprecedented during the recent oil market upheavals.

The session will extrapolate past experience to define future communication and cooperation with the objective of achieving market stabilisation.

In addition, several CEOs of key oil companies will address MPGC 2003, with ENOC’s Group CEO Hussain Sultan, Co-Chairing with Dr Fereidun Fesharaki, President of FACTS Inc, leading advisors on the Asian and Middle East downstream oil and gas markets.

The other specialised briefings and conferences, catering to various sectors of the oil and gas industry being held during the week are:

New Dates
Sep 6-7 Middle East Petroleum Strategy Briefing (MEPS 2003)
Sep 6-7 Production Sharing Contracts & International Petroleum Fiscal Systems (PSC 2003)
Sep 10-11 Middle East Gas and LNG Forum 2003 (MEGas 2003)
Sep 10-11 Outlook for East Of Suez Lubricants & Base Oils (Lubes 2003)

MEPS and PSC, traditionally held before MPGC every year, are short courses being held simultaneously on September 6-7 focusing on strategy for downstream oil markets and fiscal systems for upstream contracts.

MEGas 2003, a one-and-a-half-day event focusing on Gas and LNG issues on September 10-11, which will follow MPGC 2003, will discuss the growing appetite for Middle East LNG, including that from newcomer Egypt, the new possibilities for intra-gas trade after the Iraq war.

It will have a special address on Saudi gas, of special interest after the decision to reconsider the bidding process for the massive project on the books for the last two years.

To be chaired by Mr. James Ball, Chairman of the London-based Gas Strategies, MEGas will feature two keynotes by Ali Al-Ajmi, Vice President of Southern Gas Operations of Saudi Aramco and Charles Watson, Director of Shell Gas for the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.

Participants will also hear from India, which will become later this year, the region’s new export market. The MEGas agenda will also feature roundtables on LNG prospects/shipping and geopolitics.

Being held again during MEOW after three years, on September 10-11 2003, LUBES 2003 a two-day event will focus on the region’s fast growing lubricants industry.

To be hosted by ENOC and jointly chaired by ENOC International Sales LLC’s Chief Operating Officer, Kamal Said and Dr Nadim Najim, Marketing Department Manager of ADNOC Distribution, the event will address key developments in the global lubricants industry with special emphasis on base oil and additive manufacturing technologies, base oil quality trends and country presentations on markets in the GCC.

More than 650 participants are expected to attend the week’s events, which are being held under the Patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defense and hosted by the Emirates National Oil Company Ltd (ENOC) LLC.

MPGC and the Middle East Petroleum & Gas Week 2003 events are being organised by The Conference Connection Inc.

ENOC will also host the gala conference dinner on September 8 2003.

Other sponsoring companies include EnCana; the largest North American based independent oil and gas company, as senior sponsor, ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, Occidental Petroleum Corporation, Petroplus, Shell, Total, Vitol and the Rais, Hassan Saadi Group, with Khaleej Times and Oil and Gas Journal as official publications.
