Oracle Corporation the world’s largest enterprise software
company, announced the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel)
has successfully employed the Oracle technology platform to create
a comprehensive wireless infrastructure for government and telecommunications
customer service projects.
In the first phase of the project, Oman’s Ministry of Education
used the Oracle-based OmanTel system to send high school student
exam grades via short message service (SMS).
The new OmanTel service has thus far facilitated more than 200,000
student grade requests via SMS, and OmanTel is promoting the use
of interactive information services to other ministries as part
of the country’s e-government efforts.
OmanTel will also use its Oracle infrastructure to create Internet
portals that enable both pre- and post-paid GSM customers to access
account balances and other information through a variety of channels,
including voice, SMS, and the Internet.
OmanTel has developed its new SMS infrastructure using Oracle9i
Database with Real Application Clusters, Oracle9i Application Server,
and Oracle9i Developer Suite.
The telecoms provider has built the necessary applications in-house,
drawing on the expertise of its predominately Omani national development
team.
“There were three major criteria for a technology provider
to help create OmanTel’s new SMS infrastructure. We needed
a platform that would be highly available to handle SMS requests
around the clock, a scalable architecture to meet our future growth
targets, and a highly secure environment, given that the system
will transmit confidential information,” stated engineer,
Mohammed Ali Al-Wohaibi Executive President.
“We found that Oracle was the only vendor capable of meeting
these requirements, with a simple and integrated platform that actually
reduces OmanTel’s total cost of technology ownership,"
he said.
In addition to these benefits, using the Oracle technology platform
has reduced the complexity of OmanTel’s computing environment,
and enabled the telecoms leader to more easily and quickly manage
the administration of its new wireless infrastructure.
Reliability is a vital component of the new OmanTel SMS system,
and the Oracle platform reduces planned downtime and protects the
system from instances of server, site, and storage failure, as well
as human error.
“Oman’s geography and dispersed population make it
an ideal market for increased wireless opportunities, and OmanTel
is poised to meet rising customer demand for SMS information services
via its new Oracle-based platform,” noted Husam Dajani, Vice
President, Oracle Middle East.
“With more than half a million GSM customers, OmanTel already
has a healthy user base for its SMS and other wireless initiatives,
and Oracle is providing the scalability to rapidly increase the
scope of OmanTel’s wireless initiative as more customers access
the new services,” Dajani added.
Oracle9i Application Server’s extensible framework supports
a full spectrum of wireless and mobile applications, making it easier
and more cost-effective to develop and deploy mobile solutions.
With Oracle9i Application Server, companies can choose from an
array of application models including: browser-based, offline, voice,
and J2ME to extend existing applications or create new mobile ones.
Centrally provision, deploy and manage all your applications -
including mobile - for lower total cost of ownership, fewer security
risks and better performance.
