Shell is stepping into position as one of the top polyol producers
worldwide with the opening of a new plant at its manufacturing complex
in Pernis, the Netherlands.
Shell Nederland Chemie (SNC) BV's new polymer polyols plant provides
high quality, high solids products which are used in the manufacture
of furniture, bedding and automobile seating.
The plant, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, increases
SNC's production of styrene acrylonitrile co-polymer polyol nearly
five-fold to some 50,000 tonnes per annum. Overall, Shell chemicals
companies' total polyol production worldwide will grow to more than
400,000 tonnes per annum.
Olivier Thorel, global business manager for PO and urethane chemicals
in Shell Chemicals Limited, said: “The new plant at Pernis
will service a global market, feeding our network of blending units
in the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Jordan to meet the
needs of our customers. Once it is in full production, the plant
will make us among the top polyol producers, serving customers in
all regions of the world, a significant change from a few years
ago. These investments underline Shell chemicals companies’
leading role in the ever-evolving global polyurethane industry.”
Shell announced recently that construction had begun in China on
the Nanhai Petrochemicals Plant in which it has a 50 percent shareholding.
The US$ 4.3 billion plant, located in the south-eastern corner of
Guangdong province about 80 km from Hong Kong, will have a capacity
of 550,000 tpa styrene monomer, 250,000 tpa propylene oxide and
135,000 tpa polyols.
