Inmarsat adds to regional BGAN satellite service

Posted: 13 July 2003

Extended support for IP telephony, videoconferencing and Mac users further enhance high-speed enterprise data solution

Inmarsat, the Total Communications Network, announced its Regional BGAN solution has been extended to support Virtual Private Networks (VPN), allowing mobile users to establish high-speed, secure access to corporate networks through the world’s leading VPN products.

Inmarsat also announced that Regional BGAN now supports the H.323 standard for videoconferencing and IP telephony, expanding its ability to deliver rich enterprise communications, and is now easier to configure for Apple Mac users and those using older Microsoft Windows® operating systems.

These improvements have been made as a result of Inmarsat’s programme of consultation with its user community and in response to evolving market requirements. VPNs have emerged as a key component of the modern mobile enterprise, with increasingly flexible and remote working driving demand for secure access to corporate networks in any place and at any time.

“This latest software release reinforces Regional BGAN’s position as the only business solution for reliable, secure, mobile high-speed enterprise communications,” said Issa Odtallah, senior technical manager at Inmarsat. “These upgrades complete our solution for connectivity to the enterprise in a business climate that demands access to information and resources, as and when required. They are testament to the value that Inmarsat places on consultation with its partners, sales channels, and end user community.”

Regional BGAN, a notebook-sized satellite IP modem, offers businesses of all sizes high-speed data services, via satellite, over shared, secure 144kbit/s channels, virtually anywhere in up to 99 countries. It extends the reach of the corporate office to allow businesses to operate without the constraints of terrestrial networks or in locations where these are not available. It enables remote access to corporate networks, to the Internet, to email, and to manage file transfers.
