Baroid helps operators meet environmental regulations

Posted: 23 July 2003

The Baroid product service line of Halliburton Energy Services has acquired Two-Stage Hammermill cuttings grinder technology to assist operators in meeting stringent environmental regulations in onshore and offshore locations and to complete its offerings in the cuttings grinding and injection service.

Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton. The technology is a key component of Halliburton's FullCircle cuttings injection process, which includes feasibility studies, planning, cuttings handling and slurrification, and pressure pumping.

"This acquisition will allow Halliburton to strengthen its position in the cuttings injection market and complements Halliburton's existing services and expertise in pressure pumping," said Simon Seaton, global coordinator for the Baroid Surface Solutions and Halliburton Total Fluids Management.

"It is important because the cuttings injection market is projected to increase over the next two years as more stringent environmental regulations limit disposal options for cuttings generated by drilling operations."

The Baroid Two-Stage Hammermill cuttings grinder can handle high volumes of coarse or abrasive cuttings and produce a finely ground end product suitable for injection.

Similar machines on the market today have drawbacks related to high consumable costs, decreased rig efficiency due to downtime required to replace consumables, low feed rates and the need to re-process materials in order to achieve particle size grade requirements.

Inability to process abnormally high volumes or cuttings from hard formations may prevent the operator from injecting some cuttings, making it necessary to seek other more costly disposal options.

The Hammermill cuttings grinder is designed for maximum flexibility and can be configured to accommodate different feed rates, formation types, fibers, sands and other materials.

Retention time in the mill can be adjusted to achieve the desired final product size. The unit can replace the much larger and more capital intensive ball mills currently in use.

Development of both smaller and modular versions of the Baroid Two-Stage Hammermill is under way.

Halliburton Energy Services provides products, services, and integrated solutions for oil and gas exploration, development, and production.
