Canon PC-linked calculators speed up accounts

Posted: 28 July 2003

USB connection between full-featured accounts calculator and PC allows users to enter values directly into spreadsheets or other PC applications

Canon Middle East announced the release of its first ever PC link function calculators, the desktop Canon LS-120PC and handheld Canon LS-12PC.

Designed to make life faster and easier for those that do a lot of arithmetic in their work, particularly accounts people, these two USB connectable calculators have been designed specifically to work seamlessly with spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel.

“Even though the PC is a hugely powerful computing device, most accountants still prefer to do calculations of subtotals and percentages on separate calculators, as it allows them to get the numbers they need, without having to swap backwards and forwards between applications,” said Michel Sabbagh, Marketing Manager of Canon Middle East.

“This is particularly notable in the Middle East, where much of the accounting done here is still based on reconciliation of paper-based bills, invoices and statements. We expect this great device to do really well in this market, as it is a great productivity tool.”

Both of the new 12 button calculators share identical functions and are capable of being used to enter values and formulae into spreadsheet cells and navigate around spreadsheets, directly from custom buttons on the calculator.

The Canon LS 12PC is the world’s smallest PC connectable calculator and is ideal for accompanying note-book computers. The Canon LS-120PC is a desktop version with an attractive silver metallic finish, larger display and rubber feet.

Plug in and start working – straight out of the box
Both the Canon LS-12PC and LS-120PC use a standard USB connection and are Human Interface Device (HID) compliant, which means there is no driver to install. The calculators will start working automatically as soon as they are connected to the computer’s USB port with the cable supplied. Both models are dual powered (solar and battery).
PC and Calculator modes

Users can toggle between two operational modes. In Calculator mode, the devices operate as a normal calculator with no information passing from calculator to PC until the [SEND] button is pressed. Hitting [SEND] then inserts the value displayed on the calculator display into the application’s active cell, and automatically selects the cell below as the new active cell.

In PC mode, the calculator works as a numeric keypad. Depressing a number on the calculator instantly sends that number to the cursor position in the active cell. Cursor keys (up, down, left and right) on the calculator allow navigation around the spreadsheet and can be used in conjunction with the arithmetic function keys to enter simple formulae.
