Marathon second ultra deepwater oil discovery on Angola Block 31

Posted: 28 July 2003

Marathon Oil Corporation confirmed its subsidiary, Marathon Petroleum Angola Block 31 Limited, participated in a deepwater discovery on Block 31 offshore Angola.

The Saturno-1 discovery well, which is located approximately 170 kilometers (105 miles) off the Angolan coast, tested at a maximum rate of 5,000 barrels of oil per day through a 44/64-inch choke.

The well was drilled in 1,804 meters (5,919 feet) of water and reached a total depth of 4,707 meters (15,444 feet) below sea level. Saturno is 14 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the Plutao discovery on Block 31, which was announced last year.

"Our success at Saturno marks the third ultra deepwater discovery in which Marathon has participated during the past year in Angola," said Philip Behrman, Marathon senior vice president of Worldwide Exploration. "In the near term, our intent is to continue exploration efforts which will allow us to better define the potential of our offshore Angola blocks and move toward the commercialisation of these resources."

Currently, Marathon is participating in the Marte Prospect, which is being drilled on Block 31 approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of the Plutao discovery.
The concessionaire of Block 31 is Sonangol, Angola's state-owned oil company.

Marathon has a 10-per cent interest in Block 31, along with the operator BP Exploration Angola with 26.67 per cent, Sonangol, E.P. with 20 per cent, Esso Exploration and Production Angola (Block 31) Limited with 25 per cent, Statoil Angola A.S. with 13.33 per cent and EPA (Block 31) Ltd (a member of the Total group) with 5 per cent.

Marathon also holds a 30-per cent interest in the adjacent Block 32 to the south where the Gindungo discovery was recently announced.
Marathon is an integrated energy company engaged in the worldwide exploration, production and transportation of crude oil and natural gas.

Through Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, the company also refines, markets and transports petroleum products in the United States.
