Amiral Maritime Corporation implements Oracle financials

Posted: 3 August 2003

Oracle E-Business Suite streamlines financial processes for logistics, shipping and port giant

Oracle Corporation the world’s largest enterprise software company, announced Amiral Maritime Corporation (AMC), a major transportation and logistics group based in Egypt, has implemented the Oracle Financials modules of the Oracle E-Business Suite in just sixty days.

As part of a concerted effort to streamline its operations and enhance customer service, AMC has centralized its entire user technology environment, which ranges from financial reporting and analysis applications to its website and customer interfaces, on Oracle. AMC’s in-house team of IT professionals managed all aspects of the Oracle implementation.

AMC — which owns Sokhna Port Development Company, Egyptian Maritime Services, International Shipping and Transportation Company, and Royal Maritime — has deployed Oracle General Ledger, Oracle Accounts Payable, Oracle Accounts Receivable, Oracle Financial Analyzer, Oracle Cash Management, and Oracle Financials Intelligence as part of its initiative to boost the timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting across the entire group.

To increase service levels with both partners and customers, AMC has deployed the Oracle technology platform, including the Oracle9i database, Oracle9i Application Server and Oracle9i Developer Suite, to create separate Java-based websites.

These dynamic sites include port registration and berthing applications, and act as highly reliable, scalable online communication channels for AMC. Based on the enthusiastic response to these websites, the group is considering additional portal and customer relationship management initiatives to further expand its service offerings.

“AMC manages some of the most advanced shipping and logistics facilities in the Middle East, and the volume forecast for cargo being handled through the Sokhna Port by 2005 is estimated at more than 20 million tons. With this type of aggressive growth target, AMC needed a technology partner with industry experience in the maritime sector, as well as an integrated and complete set of business solutions,” said Ibrahim Shoeib, Group IT manager, AMC.

“AMC is already deriving benefits from our record-time, sixty day implementation of Oracle Financials, and the technology platform supporting our customer and partner-facing websites is also enabling swift development and deployment of our in-house applications,” added Shoeib.

By centralizing its technology resources through a single software platform, AMC is receiving considerable business benefits. From an internal perspective, the logistics and transport group can now reduce operating costs, increase management’s visibility across the different elements of the enterprise, and gain even greater control over key business processes. Externally, AMC’s interactive websites enable customers and partners to utilize online applications and gain access to key information remotely and in real time.

AMC selected Oracle as its information management partner across the entire organization following a successful Oracle implementation by the Sokhna Port Development Group - operators of Egypt’s only privately run and electronically managed port.

“AMC has announced an extremely ambitious growth strategy, with a tremendous expansion in capacity and throughput. The group’s ebusiness project should enable AMC to maintain the necessary financial controls during such a dynamic period of development,” commented Atef Helmy, Managing Director of Oracle Egypt.

“At the same time, there is increasing competition in the logistics and transport sector, and AMC’s increased focus on its partner and customer relationships should deliver a competitive advantage to the group,” Helmy added.
