Rebuilding Iraq's power infrastructure

Posted: 2 September 2003

POWER-GEN Middle East's opening strategic conference track on Monday 13 October will gather high level speakers from Bechtel, Iraq Electricity Commission, HSBC Investment Bank, International Power, White & Case LLP and other organizations to address rebuilding Iraq's power infrastructure.

This conference track at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibitions Centre will be the first in the region to focus on Iraq's power needs since the end of the conflict and is believed to be the first time that high ranking individuals with key responsibility for restoring and rebuilding power supply in Iraq will meet to publicly discuss one of the subjects currently dominating news headlines around the world.

For any company or individual in the power industry considering being a part of the reconstruction process in Iraq, this conference session and panel discussion is a must.

Dr Karim Hasan, director general of the Iraq Electricity Commission and Mr Dean Hagerty, Bechtel's project manager responsible for power supply in Iraq will be joined by high ranking professionals from organizations active in Iraq including Dr Ranald Spiers, international development director of International Power; Mr Mark Lemmon, director of project and export finance at HBSC Investment Bank's utilities sector and Mr Alexander Kritzalis, partner at US law firm White & Case LLP.

This uniquely qualified array of speakers will be able to provide POWER-GEN Middle East 2003 conference delegates with an appreciation of Iraq's power requirements, the process under which reconstruction is being undertaken and the legal and financing issues.

The Iraq Electricity Commission and Bechtel are working together on a joint programme to increase power generation in Iraq in the short term and rehabilitate plants to improve power output in the future.

Over the next decade an estimated US$ 10-15 bn will need to be invested in the provision of electricity and telecommunications in the country.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, POWER-GEN Middle East 2003 is organized by the General Exhibitions Corporation (GEC) of Abu Dhabi in co-operation with US multi-media provider PennWell Corporation.

The event is supported and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), the public organization responsible for implementing the Abu Dhabi government's policy of privatization of the water and electricity sector.

POWER-GEN Middle East is the definitive conference and exhibition in the Middle East region focusing on power generation, transmission & distribution and associated desalination issues.

Onsite registration opens at ADIEC on Sunday 12 October at 08.30 hours and remains open throughout the three days of the event.

The exhibition opens at 10.00 hours on Monday 13 October.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 11.00 hours, and the conference will start after lunch at 14.00 hours on the same day.
