Halliburton's Sperry-Sun installs 25th Flexrite Multilateral Junction

Posted: 4 September 2003

Sperry-Sun, a product service line of Halliburton Energy Services and a proven leader in multilateral installations and reservoir deliverability, recently completed the installation of its 25th FlexRite isolated tie-back multilateral junction (part of the SperryRite advanced reservoir drainage service) for Norsk Hydro on the Troll Olje field in the North Sea.

The TAML (Technology Advancement for Multilaterals) level 5 multilateral system helps increase access to additional reserves, reduce costs and installation time compared to single wells, and provides a low-risk junction isolation alternative.

Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton.

"Halliburton continues to maximize reservoir drainage for customers by establishing the most efficient and cost-effective drainage architecture for the unique characteristics of each individual reservoir," said Jorunn Saetre, Halliburton Energy Services Country vice president for Norway. "The installation of the 25th FlexRite multilateral junction for Norsk Hydro further proves our commitment to leading technology for the industry."

Norsk Hydro has chosen multilateral wells to reach the most inaccessible oil reservoirs of the Troll Olje field, where the oil-bearing layers can be as thin as 10 meters. These thin layers require the oil to be drained through long horizontal wells. By having several conduits reaching into the shallow reservoir, it is possible to produce more oil at a lower cost. Norsk Hydro, together with Halliburton, has tailored a multilateral well solution that prevents sand production and allows several reservoir sections to be branched together in pressure-tight junctions. Development of the FlexRite system commenced in March 2000 and the first installation was completed in January 2001.

"Nearly all the wells drilled on Troll Olje today are multilaterals, and even tri-lateral wells are becoming commonplace. Our next step is a quad-lateral this summer," says Tor Madsen, section manager for Troll Petroleum Technology, Norsk Hydro.

Both Norsk Hydro and Sperry-Sun reached a milestone in the application of multilateral technology when FlexRite junction number 25 was installed on the Troll Olje field. These junctions have been installed in 19 wells with two lateral branches and three wells with three lateral branches, all from semi-submersible rigs. Additional multilateral wells are planned for Troll Olje including a quad-lateral, three triple-laterals, and a dual-lateral with intelligent completion at the forefront. The FlexRite multilateral system development is an excellent example of how an operator can develop and utilize new technology in cooperation with a preferred supplier.

On average, a FlexRite multilateral junction is completed in five days. When compared to installations of additional templates and drilling of additional wells to access this oil, Norsk Hydro have cut the costs dramatically and more than doubled the amount of additional reserves produced. This is a reflection on multilateral technology in general, and the opportunities that lie in the dedicated use of this technology.
