Halliburton awarded contract for under balanced applications by
Statoil for Gullfaks field
Posted: 4 September 2003
Halliburton Energy Services in Norway has been awarded a contract
to provide Underbalanced Applications (UBA) Engineering and Support
for Statoil at its Gullfaks field on the Norwegian Continental shelf.
Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton.
The Statoil contract represents the first time that Underbalanced
Applications Technology will be utilized within the Norwegian Continental
shelf. The use of UBA technology and techniques will assist in overcoming
challenges caused by variable formation pressures found in various
intervals of the Gullfaks formations.
Johan Eck-Olsen, Statoil's Drilling Project Manager for the Gullfaks
Underbalanced Operations project, said: "Drilling underbalanced
is an important method for solving complex drilling problems and
will help increase the oil recovery from fields that are already
in production. This contract is considered a milestone, since this
is the first operation that will be performed on the Norwegian Continental
Shelf by use of this technology. This is an important project for
Statoil and a successful completion should open up more opportunities
on the Norwegian Shelf since several fields and reservoirs would
benefit from using this kind of technology."
Halliburton's Country Manager Tarjei Gudmestad, said: "The
technology provides additional safeguards and controls as the well
enters the high pressure zones of the formations. It also enables
low mud weight in order not to damage the formation. We have experienced
excellent results using this technology in locations around the
world."
This is an exciting project and we welcome the opportunity and
challenge to assist Statoil in introducing and developing Underbalanced
Applications technology in the Norwegian market, said Ray Bullock,
Business Segment Manager, and Ian Mchardy, UBA Project Manager,
both of Halliburton.
Halliburton has been present in the Norwegian Market since the
first well was spudded in 1966 and is now a leader in the Norwegian
market place.
