Technology adds powerful turbo engine to SIS software
Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) announced the acquisition
of Trondheim, Norway-based VoxelVision (www.voxelvision.com).
The powerful visualisation engine and seismic functionality developed
by VoxelVision are specifically designed to manage, visualise and
interpret massive 3D volumes in a PC environment, leveraging a Linux
cluster in the most cost-effective way.
It provides an order of magnitude increase in speed and efficiency
for exploration or production interpretation.
"SIS is committed to delivering the best technology on affordable
platforms," said Schlumberger Information Solutions President
Ihab Toma.
"The VoxelVision turbo engine, coupled with our industry-leading
applications, brings the power of high-end visualisation and seismic
applications to a PC. This is the most cost-effective combination
of interpretation applications and technology available today."
The unique VoxelVision technology is designed and optimised for
cluster environments. It allows applications to run concurrent,
multi-level dynamic parallel tasks, giving the user exceptionally
fast results. The engine is fully scaleable and provides outstanding
price performance on single CPU and distributed cluster configurations.
The first SIS commercial offering incorporating the turbo engine
— GeoFrame GeoViz 3D interpretation and visualisation application
— will be released by year-end.
The VoxelVision technology will become a key component of other
SIS applications, such as Petrel and Inside Reality. Combined with
existing SIS intellectual property, VoxelVision technology and seismic
applications will form the foundation for a new interpretation paradigm.
"We started to explore this technology because we saw the
need in the industry for applications that could take advantage
of PC clusters," said Ola Fjeld, VoxelVision founder. "Incorporating
the VoxelVision technology and expertise into SIS preeminent software
offers tremendous opportunities for us to realise this vision on
a global scale."
The power of VoxelVision provides additional speed and flexibility
to the Living Model open seismic-to-simulation workflows, delivering
a timely and dependable model to drive business decisions.
