Gateway
2003 — real jobs for serious Emiratis
Posted: 16 September 2003
Top companies pledge 250 jobs for nationals
The UAE's premier Emiratisation event, Gateway 2003, to be held
from December 7-9, 2003, will provide more than 250 locals with
real, full time employment.
The first event to target real jobs on-site, and the first event
to be held at Dubai's 'Knowledge Village', will bring together leading
Emirates employers, including government, tourism, retail, IT, media
and banking organisations, and hundreds of high-achieving young
Emiratis keen to embark on a successful career.
Káren Storey, Managing Partner of x-Logic, said: "This
is a quantum leap away from traditional career fairs. It is an event
for serious jobseekers seeking serious careers. It is a truly interactive
event that will enhance the skills of nationals. This is not about
meeting your peers and having a day out, it's about adopting a proactive,
rather than reactive, approach to Emiratisation.”
Organised by Knowledge Village-based management and training consultancy,
x-Logic, the initiative has the backing of some heavyweight local
organisations. It is sponsored by National Bank of Dubai, the Emiratisation
Task Force for Tourism, the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism
and Commerce Marketing, WAFI Group and Microsoft. As well as these
organisations, more than 70 leading UAE private and public sector
companies will attend and exhibit.
Knowledge Village is an official supporter of Gateway 2003.
Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, Director of Knowledge Village, said: “Knowledge
Village has a vision to support the development of a 21st century
economy based on knowledge and people. The new knowledge economy
will be one where human capital is the chief source of economic
value, and one where education and training become lifelong endeavours.
“The underpinning philosophy of Knowledge Village rests upon
a paradigm shift from face-to-face, academic learning - which is
out of touch with the needs of commerce and industry - to a new
model of industry-focused learning derived from new technologies
– which is why we are supporting X-Logic in launching Gateway
2003.”
He said events such as Gateway 2003 will help fulfil the vision
of Knowledge Village; in creating awareness of the benefits of increased
knowledge, sharing best practice and creating real sustainable opportunities
by promoting a learning society.
One of the key aspects of the event is that it embraces technology.
In order to take part, job seekers must log onto www.gateway2jobs.com,
where they are invited to create an on-line profile – similar
to a CV - which is then matched, using cutting edge technology,
to appropriate careers.
“Unlike ordinary career fairs, Gateway 2003 not only provides
the opportunity for job seekers to gain better career and life skills
but creates an exceptional environment where real jobs are offered
on site. Gateway 2003 will help arm the population with the necessary
skills to ensure the UAE remains competitive,” said Storey.
Before the event, x-Logic, together with partner human resources
and management consulting company, Profiles International, will
assess all registered candidates using the on-line Profile XT assessment
tool. Each candidate’s competence profile will then be benchmarked
against pre-set job patterns.
This will ensure maximum alignment between the candidate’s
competence and the job requirements, as well as improve job satisfaction
and better meet organisational requirements.
Registered delegates pay a nominal fee, which provides them with
a three-day pass to the event, including career advice, workshops,
seminars, and access to the nation's leading employers.
Without registering on-line in advance, job seekers may not attend
the event, which ensures a high calibre of attendees.
Dr Abdulla added: “The future economic success of the UAE
will hinge on the skills and capabilities of the population; UAE
youth is the key to creating a workforce which is able to compete
in the emerging knowledge-based, global economy.”
A series of high impact, short duration workshops and seminars
will run alongside the event, focusing on skill enhancement and
career development. The series will cover subjects such as introductions
to careers with different companies; personal presentation; work
confidence, interview tactics and e-mail etiquette.
"Most companies operating in the UAE have an Emiratisation
target. Gateway 2003 provides the perfect forum for targets to be
achieved with appropriate candidates,” concluded Storey.
