Barber
and DNV sign fleet agreement on security services
Posted: 26 September 2003
Barber and DNV have reached an agreement to certify all flagged
vessels operating in regions where DNV is authorised. The agreement,
which is the most comprehensive of its kind for DNV to date, will
involve more than 100 vessels.
The International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, which comes
into effect July 1st 2004, was drafted in part as IMO’s response
to the September 11th terrorist attacks. The Code requires all ports
and vessels to implement plans and procedures to safeguard against
terrorism and other illegal acts. Barber, operating as ship manager
and consultant, and DNV, as a certifying body for flag states, have
focused on providing services of high quality to their respective
customers and have been proactive in meeting the requirements of
the ISPS Code.
Barber’s maritime security services are headed from their
office in Mumbai, India, where they also provide security training
in conjunction with the International Maritime Training Centre (IMTC).
DNV will also establish a team to serve Barber directly from their
Mumbai office. With centralised plan review and approval and close
interaction between Barber’s Company Security officers and
DNV, the certification process is expected to flow smoothly, and
in a timely and cost effective manner.
The co-operation with DNV enables Barber to take onboard a large
number of new clients in addition to their own fleet for security
assistance and ISPS certification.
