BJ Process and Pipeline Services completes pipeline pre-commissioning contract in Ecuador

Posted: 7 October 2003

BJ Process and Pipeline Services (BJ PPS) announced that it has successfully completed a challenging pipeline pre-commissioning contract for Techint International Construction Corporation in Ecuador. More specifically, BJ PPS supplied pre-cleaning, hydrotesting and filling services on the pipeline network, which runs from Lago Agrio to Esmereldas on the coast.

The pipeline then splits into four offshore loading lines running out to two CALM loading buoys approximately eight miles offshore.

BJ PPS used some of its largest high-head centrifugal pumps to pump water at flowrates as high as 3500gpm and pressures of 2000psig at elevations of up to 4050m over the rugged Andes Mountains. By using these large pumps, it is unnecessary to carry out multiple set-ups as services are carried out along the pipeline. As a result, transportation costs are significantly reduced, and intrusion into the environment is kept to a minimum.

The Techint contract was serviced by BJ PPS personnel based at the division’s U.S. headquarters in Houston, as well those based at BJ PPS bases in Venezuela, Argentina and Mexico. Work was carried out over a period of 10 months, and was the result of a contract awarded by Techint to BJ PPS in autumn of 2002.

Ecuador Operation a First
During the past five years, BJ PPS has carried out similar pre-commissioning services for Techint, including hydrotesting, air testing, and cleaning and drying services on several of the Argentina to Chile gas pipelines, including Gas Andes, Gas Pacifico and NorAndino. The operation for Techint represents the first time that BJ PPS will have provided services in Ecuador.

“We are very proud of the inroads that BJ PPS has made in South America since we began providing services in 1994, so the opportunity to work in Ecuador was welcome,” said John Adams, general manager of BJ PPS. “The Techint operation in Ecuador was challenging, given the elevations and rugged terrain. However, our experience working on a number of similar projects in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Brazil has provided us with invaluable insights as to how best to approach operations of this type. I am pleased to report that it was carried out safely and efficiently, with little or no impact on the environment,” he added.

BJ Services Company is a leading provider of pressure pumping and related oilfield services to the petroleum industry. The company operates in every major oil and gas producing region.
