Sterling Chemicals selects Pavilion Technologies

Posted: 13 October 2003

Pavilion Technologies announced today that Sterling Chemicals has selected Pavilion's Process Perfecter solution for the ethylbenzene line at its facility in Texas City, Texas.

The solution is expected to reduce energy consumption during the manufacturing process.

This marks the second Sterling line to install Pavilion's APC solution; the first was installed on its styrene production line in 1997.

"We chose Pavilion based on the company's proven ability to deliver a range of significant benefits from production yield to energy reduction," said Rick Crump, CEO at Sterling Chemicals. "This type of solution positively impacts our entire business and improves our bottom line."

Manufacturing companies across the industry are feeling the impact of rising natural gas prices. Pavilion's Process Perfecter provides an alternative that enables them to battle high energy prices, while having a positive impact on production simultaneously.

This agreement is part of a decade-long relationship between the two companies. For the past six years, Pavilion's Process Perfecter advanced process control solution has been online at Sterling, increasing styrene production capability and decreasing energy use.

"Sterling is an innovator in the industry. Pavilion is honored to have Sterling as a customer, and we look forward to the next decade of this partnership," said Pavilion President and CEO Ralph Carter.

Since 1993, Sterling Chemicals has used Pavilion's environmental compliance solutions to achieve compliance monitoring and reporting goals. Sterling Chemicals was a key development partner for Envisage' environmental portfolio manager, demonstrating the value of real-time emissions data capture, calculation and reporting. Sterling reported a material reduction in data reporting costs for compliance with this solution.

"As a commodity chemicals supplier, we must continually seek every technological advantage available to reduce our costs," said Dennis Yieh, process control technologist at Sterling Chemicals. "Pavilion has provided world-class engineers and a leading suite of APC and predictive modeling technology to help us achieve our business goals. "

Pavilion's Process Perfecter software solution was the first commercially available dynamic, non-linear, multi-variable Model Predictive Controller
(MPC) and is widely applied in a number of multi-variable manufacturing environments.

Process Perfecter combines steady-state optimization with model predictive control to deliver an advanced process control (APC) solution capable of managing process set-points and transitions.

Companies are able to increase production, improve product quality and reduce process variability with Pavilion's Process Perfecter solution.
