Satamatics launch micro-telemetry technology

Posted: 16 October 2003

Satamatics launches its SAT 101 miniature satellite terminal for cost-effective micro-telemetry and security monitoring

Satamatics, the operator of global satellite-based telematics information services, launched its SAT 101 miniature satellite terminal.

The new micro-telemetry terminal offers built-in data processing capability, and is an integral part of end-to-end solutions for the oil and gas industries requiring local and global connectivity. With extensive interfacing facilities, the SAT 101 can be linked to multiple sensors and incorporated into numerous application-specific solutions, ranging from pipeline cathodic protection monitoring systems and remote valve control, to lone worker security.

Satamatics' micro-telemetry services combine data gathering, processing, delivery and end-user presentation into single, low-cost solutions. With the SAT 101 terminal at the remote end, the information is delivered direct to any desktop or laptop via an Internet connection - solving problems of remote access in difficult terrain, providing centralised control of multiple installations, and reducing the frequency of field maintenance and inspection visits.

“The launch of our SAT 101 terminal reinforces our position at the leading edge of the telematics industry. It is the key element in expanding our market to address the widest possible range of applications, maximising our customer base across the oil and gas companies themselves, as well as their outsourced contractors. The product's design concept has been focused from the outset on providing the maximum flexibility for our customers, while offering very low operating costs and demonstrating highly significant savings at many levels. The SAT 101 is an integral part of our service, which provides seamless coverage across the world's continents and oceans, and includes delivery of status reports via easy-to-use display interfaces, accessible via standard web browsers.” said Peter Chisholm, CEO of UK-based Satamatics.

Solutions that incorporate the SAT 101 can be deployed individually, or integrated into comprehensive monitoring and control networks. The production output of remote wells can be checked remotely, the effectiveness of cathodic protection systems can be monitored at multiple locations along a pipeline, to give early indications of corrosion, while valves, motors and timers can also be controlled and monitored remotely. Pipeline problems, identified in a pigging operation for example, can also be addressed by using the SAT 101's built-in GPS receiver to track the location of the pig. Additionally, the ultra-compact dimensions of the SAT 101 and its low power consumption make it suitable for use by individual personnel, particularly for lone-worker security, with the system transmitting regular location reports, as well as alert messages in emergency situations.

Remotely programmable, the SAT 101 will automatically transmit reports at selected intervals, while also sending data when a condition has been met or exceeded. For example, when a particular parameter value has been reached - such as a voltage level, fluid level in a tank, or pressure value in a pipe - or even when an access door has been opened. Incorporating a GPS receiver for its location reporting function, the SAT 101 consumes minimal power for long-term unattended operation, powered from its dedicated battery pack, a local mains supply or vehicle, or a solar panel. It can be interfaced to a variety of external sensors and systems, and can be configured as an expandable 8-channel data measuring and transmitting device.

The SAT 101 terminal's ultra-compact dimensions assist with its unobtrusive installation, and it is supplied complete with a sophisticated, low-profile antenna, which maintains satellite contact down to very low elevation angles. This ensures that full advantage can be taken of the satellite footprints, out to the extremes of their coverage, to ensure effective service availability throughout the world.

About Satamatics Ltd
Satamatics' worldwide telematics services provide the critical enabling technology for fleet management, asset tracking and tracing, controlling and monitoring remote sites, and for security applications and for personnel safety. Headquartered in the UK, Satamatics works with Application Service Providers around the world to develop and deploy end-to-end service solutions across the world's ocean regions and landmasses.

Satamatics' global service provides seamless coverage throughout the world, and includes access to the company's international network of satellite gateways and data handling centres. It operates completely independently of terrestrial-based infrastructures, such as cell-phone or radio networks, avoiding their limitations of range or availability. The service utilises the Inmarsat system of geostationary satellites, to ensure maximum quality of service, with the fastest message delivery times.

Satamatics Ltd is part of the Richtec plc group of companies, which is active across a range of communications, electronics and process control technologies, with annual revenues in excess of £25 million. (For more information, please see: www.satamatics.com)
