Posted: 18 October 2003
Businesses operating in Iraq free to benefit from world
leading mobile satellite communications solutions from Inmarsat
partners
Inmarsat, the Total Communications Network, announced that it and
its commercial partners have been authorised by the office of the
Coalition Provisional Authority (the current governing authority
of Iraq) and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to
provide and sell Inmarsat’s full portfolio of mobile satellite
communications services in Iraq.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has responsibility,
by order of the Coalition Provisional Authority, for licensing all
commercial telecommunications services in Iraq.
“This is good news for the people of Iraq, and for the many
businesses helping to reconstruct the country following sanctions
and war,” said Michael Butler, managing director of Inmarsat
Ltd. “It means that they too can are assured of being able
to benefit from the award winning reliable mobile satellite communications
services Inmarsat has been offering for over 15 years.”
Inmarsat services have already been used extensively in the country
following the end of the war with aid agencies, local Internet cafes,
the media and reconstruction agencies. Now more businesses in the
country can benefit from Inmarsat services buying direct in the
country from Inmarsat solution providers and other partners.
“In particular Inmarsat Regional BGAN is a useful addition
to the portfolio of virtually any business operating in regions
without reliable high-speed data connectivity such as Iraq,”
added Michael Butler. “Affordable, and easy to use, it provides
a reliable and portable method for businesses in Inmarsat to access
the Internet and communicate on a worldwide basis using email and
other web-based applications.”
Regional BGAN, utilising a notebook-sized satellite IP modem, offers
businesses of all sizes high-speed data services, via satellite,
at speeds of up toover shared, secure 144kbit/s channels, virtually
anywhere in up to 99 countries. It extends the reach of the corporate
office to allow businesses to operate without the constraints of
terrestrial networks or in locations where these are simply not
available. It enables remote access to corporate networks, to the
Internet, to email, and to manage file transfers.
Launched at the end of 2002, Regional BGAN was recently recognised
as one of only three ‘Highly Commended’ at the World
Communications Awards 2003 where it was entered as Best New Service.
