Pavilion launches Polymer Productivity Pack (P3)

Posted: 29 October 2003

Extending the scope and value of its solution in the polymers market, Pavilion Technologies announced today the availability of the Polymer Productivity Pack (P3). The P3 product suite introduces two new products from Pavilion, ClockWorx and Configuration Manager, in conjunction with version 7.0 of Process Perfecter — the most widely adopted nonlinear control and optimization solution in the polymer marketplace today.

With P3, Pavilion provides polymer manufacturers with greater control and flexibility across an ever-growing range of operating conditions, resulting in greater profitability across the entire production cycle.

“The shift in manufacturing from supplier push to customer demand-pull requires enterprises to fundamentally alter their production methodology,” said Senior Research Analyst Tom Fiske with ARC Advisory Services, a leading manufacturing research and consulting firm. “Production runs are becoming shorter with more frequent grade changes to satisfy customer requirements.

Pavilion’s P3 suite provides the critical control functionality necessary to meet these demands.”

The Polymer Productivity Pack (P3) includes:

  • ClockWorx for simplifying and codifying complex polymer operations like start-up, shut-down and donor or catalyst change transition processes
  • Configuration Manager for streamlining the controller update process for spec limits, blend limits and operating constraints throughout the production process
  • Process Perfecter 7.0 for controlling systems with nonlinear variable dynamics

A number of leading polymer companies in Europe and North America have already implemented elements of the P3 suite. This comprehensive solution has enabled customers to more robustly control difficult transitions, which has significantly reduced overall off-spec product and increased product quality.

Process Perfecter 7.0
Process Perfecter was the first nonlinear control and optimization solution in the marketplace and is in use by more polymer lines than any other commercial APC solution. Process Perfecter 7.0 broadens Pavilion’s proven capabilities by providing more fluid control over a diverse product portfolio, helping polymer manufacturers:

  • Easily, consistently and precisely transition between products
  • Support a diverse product mix characterized by varying dynamics, grades and production rates
  • Accurately represent variable dynamics of processes to improve control actions

Process Perfecter 7.0 is the first commercial APC solution to enable ‘parametric’ variable dynamics. This approach transcends the traditional black box empirical modeling paradigm by exposing the key dynamic parameters to the end user so they can better understand, modify and maintain a more robust solution.

The algorithmic developments were funded from a Department of Energy (DOE) Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant associated with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The goal of the joint project was to commercialize an adaptive control solution that could be used by SLAC and industry to better control highly nonlinear, large-scale processes.

ClockWorx
ClockWorx delivers improved process startups, shutdowns and transitions through a real-time project management approach that facilitates complex tasks and synchronized activities.

ClockWorx complements Pavilion’s Process Perfecter with a time and sequence control capability that helps users:

  • Simplify complex operations by automating processes involving complex discrete sequences
  • Real-time Gantt Chart for sequence visualization
  • Codify and achieve best operating practices from shift-to-shift, year-to-year

Configuration Manager
Configuration Manager complements Pavilion’s Process Perfecter solution with a simple interface that helps users:

  • Automate the tasks of changing controller parameters for different product recipes
  • Securely and easily communicate model information to online controllers
  • Reduce the amount of operator time required to perform routine changes to controllers

The Polymer Productivity Pack is available immediately. Pavilion will introduce the Process Perfecter 7.0, ClockWorx and Configuration Manager to its customers in additional markets segments, including cement and consumer products, in January 2004.
