Oracle addresses ME security and cost
Posted: 2 November 2003
Oracle Corporation today announced that Oracle Identity Management
and single sign on are helping organizations strengthen security,
comply with regulatory requirements and reduce administrative costs,
as they increase access to applications.
Oracle Identity Management is software that uniquely streamlines
the identification of users – including employees, partners
or customers -- and controls their access to various applications
and information via single sign on for improved security and regulatory
compliance. Its integrated management features allow system administrators
to manage security -- including access to Oracle and non-Oracle
applications -- from a central coordinated service, which reduces
administration costs.
“Identity management is the realization that identity is
a strategic asset and the foundation upon which to build effective
security for an enterprise,” said Earl Perkins, vice president,
Security and Risk Strategies, Technology Research Services, META
Group, Inc. “Organizations are discovering that current identity
infrastructure complexity saps time and money from more important
business imperatives. They are starting to evaluate integrated identity
management suites capable of providing immediate cost savings, measurable
productivity gains and scalability to match business growth.”
Administrators frequently spend a lot of time changing user names
and passwords for employees who have lost this information, and
deleting accounts of ex-employees. According to the META Group,
automating password administration, which is only a small part of
a comprehensive identity management program, can save a 10,000-employee
company $648,000 per year.
Furthermore, employees can be more productive with better identity
management. The average employee spends 16 minutes per day logging
on using various passwords, and 45 percent of help desk calls are
about password resets. With effective password management, single
sign on and delegated administration, organizations can greatly
reduce the more than 111 days per year administrators typically
spend managing identities.
Critical Data Management
Managing identities becomes more complex as the number of users,
applications and systems grows. Centralizing user administration
with Oracle Identity Management reduces the complexity of managing
users’ identities in different parts of an organization. Building
on Oracle’s 25-year history of secure data management, Oracle
Identity Management uses Oracle’s “Unbreakable”
technology to provide the reliability, scalability and performance
that is required by businesses today.
“Everything we have learned in 25 years of building database
software to protect organizations’ most valuable information
– even national secrets – is being extended to Oracle
Identity Management,” said Ayman Abouseif, Oracle Corp.’s
senior marketing director for Middle East and Africa. “Identity
information has become significant to organizations, and Oracle’s
experience in dealing with critical business infrastructure uniquely
positions us to provide organizations with the most reliable and
secure identity management offering.”
Integrated Security Services
Identity management solutions work in tandem with an organization’s
database and application server technology. Oracle Identity Management,
part of Oracle’s Database and Application Server, eliminates
the cost and complexity that customers face in integrating niche
identity management features from different vendors with their applications,
including databases, application servers or portals.
Oracle Identity Management also works with leading directory, access
management and user provisioning solutions, allowing customers to
use Oracle Identity Management with non-Oracle applications. Oracle
Identity Management is based on industry standards and includes
the following functions:
- LDAP directory services to store and manage user identities
and access control privileges
- Web Single Sign-on services to provide users with single sign-on
to access applications
- Directory integration services to integrate Oracle Identity
Management with an organization’s existing security and
directory infrastructure
- User provisioning services for Oracle products and other software
vendor’s applications
- Public key infrastructure services (PKI), including a certificate
authority, to issue digital certificates for users
- Delegated administration services to enable users to modify
security privileges.
