SEED program assists five schools throughout Brazil
Schlumberger Oilfield Services celebrated the connecting of the
fifth Brazilian school to the Internet, as part of its Schlumberger
Excellence in Educational Development (SEED) Project.
Through SEED, Schlumberger is providing 15 computers and supporting
Internet connection costs for the next two years to the Escola Estadual
Governador Djenal Tavares Queiroz, located in Aracajú, Sergipe.
This school provides basic education to about 1500 students whose
ages range from 11- to 18-years-old.
“The computers will give students access to technology and
introduce them to the cyber world,” said Professor Osvaldina
Ribeiro da Cruz Mello, school director. “This access will
increase their educational level, bringing a new skill skills tofor
the students about to enter in the labor market, as well as to those
already out in the workplace. as to the ones already acting in the
market In addition, this will instill self confidence and enhance
their self esteem.”
The SEED Foundation is active in Brazil and 29 other countries,
reflecting the commitment of Schlumberger employee volunteers to
the continued educational development of students in countries where
Schlumberger employees live and work.
The SEED program has three components: Internet connectivity, online
science education content and collaborative projects. Since 1998,
SEED has connected 110 schools, educating 160,000 students to the
Internet in 30 economically developing countries. Five of these
schools are in Brazil — in São Paulo, Espírito
Santo and Sergipe states.
“We are proud of the community projects we have implemented
in Brazil and the results,” said Sophie Zurquiyah Rousset,
general manager, Schlumberger Oilfield Services, Latin America South.
“It is particularly rewarding to see the enthusiasm of the
students and their interest in the new concepts that the Internet
brings.
“The development of education is the base of our actions,
but we are sensitive to other basic needs the communities around
us have,” continues Zurquiyah Rousset. “Schlumberger
is actively participating in the government program - Fome Zero,
and have developmenthas developed a number of other social actions.
