Qatar to host WPC Second Regional Meeting

Posted: 7 November 2003

Under the patronage of His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Industry and Energy, Qatar Petroleum will host the World Petroleum Congress Second Regional Meeting between December 8 and 11, 2003 at the Sheraton Doha Hotel and Resort.

The Second Regional Meeting, under the theme “An Industry Committed to Excellence”, will bring together leading figures and key decision makers with the aim of further promoting regional cooperation and the exchange of views and expertise.

The 4-day conference will host around 50 renowned speakers covering 6 industry specific sessions and is expected to attract about 500 delegates from all over the world.

Leading industry figures who will speak at the meeting include H.E Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister for Energy and Industry, H.E. Eng. Sameh Fahmy Egypt's Minister of Petroleum, Mr. Robert Card, Undersecretary of the U.S. Department Of Energy, Mr. M.S. Srinivasan, Additional Secretary at India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Mr. Jim Mulva, CEO of ConocoPhillips.

The conference agenda comprises presentations of highly important subjects concerning commercial operations and technical issues related to the oil and gas industry.

The Doha meeting will deliberate on crucial issues facing the industry - globalization and the petroleum industry; world oil demand and supply; environment and sustainable development; managing risk and uncertainty in the modern petroleum industry; trends in refining and petrochemicals; and new supplies and markets for natural gas.

A major petroleum and petrochemical exhibition showcasing the latest technology in the oil and gas sectors will be held on the sidelines of the conference at the Qatar International Exhibition Center to consolidate and enhance interaction between all the major players in the industry.

Qatar was selected as the location for this world-class event, because of the outstanding developments the country has achieved in the oil and gas industry in the past decade. Shanghai hosted the First Regional Meeting in September 2001.

The World Petroleum Congress Second Regional Meeting will also provide an excellent opportunity for foreign investors to pursue partnerships with Qatar Petroleum, especially in the gas-related industries.

The WPC's 59 member countries represent over 90 percent of the world’s major oil and gas producing and consuming nations of the world.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the World Petroleum Congress and the occasion will be celebrated at the Second Regional Meeting. Its aim is to provide a forum to discuss issues facing the oil industry on a worldwide and non-political basis.
